I haven't lived in St. Louis for a few years, but I grew up there ...
What about Bissinger's or Fannie May candies? I know they sell small sample boxes and there's an outlet store in West County (or used to be) where you could get slightly imperfect candies on the cheap. Or even pieces of fudge from the fudge factory in Union Station? The Cardinals, Blues, and Rams are all huge so maybe some sporty themed nerf balls? The WalMart by my parents' house (and even here in CA, lol) has a little section of small, inexpensive local souvenirs; maybe they'd have a little Arch somethingorother?
Here are some things that I think are pretty "traditional" St. Louis
Make sure to include some locals maps (Forest Park, downtown, CWE, etc.) so people can explore. Highlight the favorites: Botanical Gardens, brewery, arch, Jewell Box, Zoo, Art Museum, City Museum, Magic House, Science Center. Good luck. If you need any more ideas let me know.
haha, I suck so much! I guess it's not like I do touristy things here, though.
Yeah, Ted Drewes is yummy but not where I live (Creve Coeur). I wonder if there is still a Fannie May outlet store...hmmm. Not sure. Bissingers, ok check. I mean if i'm gonna do chocolate I'd like to do local stuff, ya know? I bet I could make cookies in the shape of cardinals and add red frosting. My out of towners are from California and Florida. I was thinking about making my own tote bags (i sew) and I could buy a St Louis pattern, but not sure how reusable that is since they aren't cardinals fans. omg gooey butter cake cookies, GENIUS. Thanks for the ideas! Keep 'em coming if you think of any more!
I love Mrs. Lemon's OOT bags! I have only lived in st louis for about 3 years.
I think you can get those St Louis visitors guide books for free or $1 each. Depending on how many you need.
If you do water bottles or other goodies - you can always print custom labels on them maybe with the St louis Arch in the back ground...
other ideas:
Schlafly beer (you can get at any grocery store)
pasta souce from the HILL (you can get at grocery store)
Donuts from World's Fair Donuts - near the botanical gardens
omg, pasta sauce, great idea! Only problem is, they'd have to CHECK their baggage! I'll find out who's checking first. I'd hate for them to have to check a bag just b/c i got them sauce, lol. I wonder if i could get st louis shaped noodles?
Cute, i was definitely going to do water with my own label and little bags of snacks. I really LOVE the variety in Mrs. Lemon's. Food is ALWAYS good! I thought I could make extra for the bridesmaids, too. Not like I need a ton of food around. But I"m debating...if i make too many then I'll buy them. But i love the idea of making them myself. Hmm!
Oh, what about some Fitz's root beer?!!
Not food, but what about a CD of blues music from famous St. Louis musicians?
If you don't think they'd like a bag with a Cardinal on it, what about the symbol of St. Louis?
I definitely second the Bissinger's (my mom worked as a chocolatier through graduate school!). And, although it's a bit cheesy, you just MUST do something AAnheuser-Busch--it was the heart and soul of that city for years. You could do plush clydesdales for the kids, and somehting more "grown-up" for adults. Or, find a pretty postcard with the clydesdales on it, and use it for your card inside the bag.
And how about the St. Louis Museum of Art, or the park?
Oh! A lot of people forget about the other stuff AB makes ... like pretzels and peanuts.
But I'm not finding what they make. Do they even do that any more? Maybe not.
Oddly enough they also make the Monster energy drinks. Did not know that ...
Fitzs is a great idea! they have some at schnucks
Well, here's the age range of our OOT guests. It's small which is why I'm ok personalizing these so much!
~My 23 year old bridesmaid and her mom (like a second mom to me, also stayng in my guest room)
~My 55 yr old aunt/her boyfriend (hoteling it up)
~FI's dad/his estranged wife (staying in a hotel or with FSIL)
~Friends of my mom (in their 50's, hotel)
Not sure if that helps. Maybe I'll swing by the AB store and see if I can get...I dunno. Something AB-ish
There is an AB store at the Mills or there was last time I was there. I'm going to make gooey butter cake, I have a realy easy recipe my mom got in the paper a while back and put a squares in. I like the fitzes and schlafly ideas. I was thinking maps too.
What about the bags of peanuts that you can buy with the Cardinals logos on them? They usually sell them cheap outside of the stadium before the games. Those with maybe a bottle of beer (remember those aluminum bottles they made with the cardinals logos on them? Those would have been cool, too bad they don't make them anymore :( )
Crown Candy is a big St.Louis thing too. They have amazing candy!!
What about postcards with the Arch, Busch Stadium, or Forest Park on them?
Just a few ideas :)
Actually I've seen St Louis beer items at Sam's Club! I think they're a specialty item though. It seems like i've seen those! I've totally heard of Crown Candy...i hear it's a big deal but i havent' been yet!
I'm such an anti-St Louisian lol
Let's see... Maul's barbeque sauce, Imo's items (they sell the pizza sauce and salad dressing at grocery stores), or wine from any the wineries in Augusta/Hermann/etc (check out names like Stone Hill, Augusta Winery, Montelle, Mount Pleasant), and Gus' Pretzels (found near the AB Brewery).
Also, I agree with the Bissinger's! They usually have some pre-packaged candy that would be easy to throw in an OOT bag. The Cardinals peanuts are a good idea- you can sometimes find them at the grocery stores, too, if you don't have time to go downtown on a gameday.
PASTA SAUCE! SALAD DRESSING (Zia's)!!! Check out this cool set: http://www.straubs.com/product.html?id=61028&catId=38
Also, I second Gooey Butter Cake...I hear even Dierberg's makes a good one if you don't feel like it.
AND FITZ'S!!!!
Haha, there's a sign on my way to work that says "dont eat it...Maull it!" Kinda funny at 630am.
Ooooo local wine, genius! How did i not think of that. *idiot* I have some vino friends coming from out of town. My aunt isn't a drinker at all but she will definitely love some chocolate and i'm betting the salad dressing. My FI's mom loves Zia's dressing. We ate there once and it was SOOOOOOO good.
And you're right, the last thing i want to do 2 days before my wedding is freakin' MAKE gooey butter cake no matter how easy it is!!! Dierbergs it is. Dierbergs has lots of good stuff it seems. My FI likes their donuts. Not Lamars, but you know, nothing is Lamars.
You girls are wonderful! i was seriously just blanking and going "this is pathetic, I freakin' live here!"
I LOVE that salad dressing sampler! can't believe i never saw the link before. DUh. Is Hendrickson's really a StL thing?! I used to get that from Country Mart down in Branson years and years ago! I now have a bottle in my fridge! I bet FMIL might like this for a gift sometime. That makes a nice apartment welcome gift for anyone moving here too!
Don't forget Gus's Pretzels!
What about an AB-themed bottle opener? I wonder if you could put some Cards baseball cards in there too.
Gooey Louie gooey butter cakes on Chippewa (half a mile east of Ted Drewes) has individual servings of gooey butter cake that are baked and sealed in their own tin with utensil and history of gooey butter cake. They're only $2 each and the perfect OOT bag addition! They were also voted Best Gooey Butter Cake in St. Louis this year. Delish!

So I've only lived here for a year...what are some classic St Louis things I could throw in an out of town bag? I can't put toasted raviolis in there, haha! I know the Cardinals are a big deal....but is there some food item I'm not aware of? Otherwise it's going to be random snackies I buy from Sam's Club! I know I could put bud light in there, lol but my guests probably wouldn't really go for that. I was thinking of bags along the lines of what's in Mrs. Lemon's OOT bags. Thanks!
