24 hours??? FI and I are flying American Airlines to St Lucia from NY. The plane leaves here at 5:45AM, we transfer in Miami, and we will be to St Lucia by 1:40PM. The trick is you have to get that first flight to Miami or else you have to wait overnight for the next flight to the island. I believe the airfare is around $1300 for both of is and they've already bumped us up to first class.
@LMD84: Yes it’s 1:40 the next day I believe. Because when we were looking for flights we were so confused how short the flight is!
How did yo get bumped if you dont mind me asking?
@abby_mb: Our connecting flight is the same day. Maybe call into customer service instead of trying to do it online. We had a lot of issues trying to use frequent flyer miles and we are not flying on a weekend. I think that is why they bumped us up.
yea I called them. American airline’s shortest flight to St. Lucia is 25 hrs, I can’t find one that doesn’t make us stay overnight. Delta has a same day flight but double the price
This is going to be quite the trip for you! But, I just looked this up on Kayak.com (ontario to st lucia) and its not actually 25 hours in the AIR, its about 13,the rest are layovers. We are going to Fiji from Seattle and although we technically lose an entire day, the actual flight itself from the US to Fiji is 11 hours or so. I would suggest doing a red eye which gets you in the next day in the afternoon. The first trip that came up on Kayak.com is part Air CA and part United. Good luck!
@MsJ2theZ: We are leaving from Detroit. Opps, I knew that, I should’ve been more specific! lol Its just our reservations start the 27th and with all the lay overs we wont arrive til the 28th
Gotcha! Well we had the same thing - bought a Groupon and booked starting on a Monday and then found out after looking into how long it takes to get there, that you cross the date line. So we leave Sunday night Seattle time and arrive TUESDAY Fiji time! So we just moved the reservation. No biggie on our end. Hopefully its as easy for you!
@LMD84: I'm doing the same thing you are, except my flight leaves at 5:50am from Charlotte.
If you don't want to layover, is it possible to look at other days for flights? Maybe from Detroit to Miami, they only have certain days with the early morning flights. I know for me, I'm leaving on a Tuesday to get the best price/schedule.
St lucia isnt a 24hr flight. It is only around 5-6 hours from Toronto. It looks like you are from ontario also. We are going in April and our flight leaves at 6 am and we are scheduled to arrive at 11am. I would double check your tickets! Have fun on your vacation!!
@kc3636: Yea, I know. But the tickets we found on american airline have a whole day lay over in Miami. Delta has same day arrivals...for double the price. The tickets are almost as much as the villa rental!
My sis and bro in law and went to st lucia for their honeymoon, flying out of newark buuuut I know for a fact that it didn't take them 24 hours..what the hell??! I guess a layover in Miami wouldn't be the worst thing in the world since there are a lot of things to do there and I'm sure sites to see.
@abby_mb: that is too bad you have a layover for that long. But i agree, there is lots to do in miami so take advantage of it! The first place i would be going is to The Limited and White House Black Market! Lol!

So FI and I made a big mistake by not looking at tickets AND reserving our villa in St. Lucia at the same time. Last night we were looking and it takes 24 hrs to get there!!! Now we have to try to reschedule our days.
They are also kinda pricey for bad seats...anyone have advice on how to score good plane tickets for a pretty good price??
Anyone fly to St. Lucia that can give some advice on how to survive (Im not good with flights) the 24 hr flight / wanna share some stories?!
