Hello all! My fiance & I have decided on going to one of the “St.” Islands (Martin, Thomas, or Lucia) for our honeymoon. I need advice on which island you prefer and why. Also, what activities there are to do in each would be greatly appreciated!!!
Where did you stay? WHat activities did you do? Best beaches?
Thank You!!! 🙂

@meghin16: Posting to save this thread! We are doing a cruise that stops in St. Lucia, St. Thomas and St. Marteen, so I want to see what others recommend doing there!

Of these 3, I’d pick Sint Maarten / St Martin… it is a relatively safe island, clean and has a variety of things to do and see. The BIG BONUS with this island is you literally get two vacations for the price of one … as the island is co-owned by two seperate countries. Sint Maarten by the Netherlands and St Martin b the French. You can go back and forth between the two countries very easily.
A good place to start your research on these Destinations is Wikipedia… great spot to get an overview.
Wikipedia – Sint Maarten = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint_Maarten
Wikipedia – Saint Martin = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Martin
And of course a map = http://goo.gl/maps/ml5WG
I have only been there on a cruise, so I can’t really comment on where to stay… but you can certainly find that sort of thing out by using various resources available to you in print or on-line… including the Islands Official Tourism Websites, and also TripAdvisor.

Tourism Saint Martin = http://www.stmartinisland.org/
TripAdvisor – Sint Maarten / St Martin = http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Tourism-g147346-St_Martin_St_Maarten-Vacations.html
Hope this helps,
PS… This should get you started… I have a bit more info on what to see and do as well… just let me know.

I can’t comment on the other two “saints” but I lived in St. Martin for a couple of years. It’s got one of the busiest cruise ship ports and airports in the Caribbean, which makes it a cultural hub, of sorts. The cruise ships dock in Philipsburg, which is the capitol of the Dutch side and has a good deal of shopping and places to eat. From there, people often rent Jeeps and drive around a bit: there is basically one circular road that goes around the entire Island.
Things worth seeing while there: Shopping in Philipsburg, yachts in the harbor (like hundreds of millions of dollars yachts) Maho beach (where the airplanes are landing right overhead. Take a catamaran booze cruise around the islands, you’ll go snorkeling (not super great snorkeling) but really fun to be out on the water. Try a Bailey’s Banana Colada, or four. A popular nude beach is Orient Beach: only part of it is “nude,” and really, since half the island is French, you’ll see a lot more skin than on American beaches. It’s entertaining. In Marigot (the French side) there is a market where you can buy fresh fruits, local crafts, spices on the cheap! Like vanilla beans and saffron, which would otherwise break the bank. Highly recommend the rum that’s got a banana and vanilla soaking in it. The highest point on the island (which requires driving then walking) is called Pic du Paradis and has views to many other islands. All around the golf course on the Dutch side are abandoned condos from when a category 5 hurricane wrecked the island in the 1990s. Restaurants are AMAZING. Drinking is cheap. There are more than 30 beaches to watch the indescribable clear blue WARM waters from. My favorite restaurant is the French Ma Ti Beach. Off the beaten path, unpretentious French flavors.
Worth noting that since half the island is Dutch, drugs and prostitution are legal. Don’t find yourself in the dark off the main drag in Philipsburg.
There are no checkpoints around the island, moving from French to Dutch side is marked only by a sign.

I’ve always wanted to go to the “St” islands!!! My SO is against it though because we live in FL and are in the hot sun and beaches all the time so we’re going to somewhere cold =) I want to do a cruise or something there tho!

TO @soontobemrsm11: you said,
so we’re going to somewhere cold =)
As your Wedding date says January 20, 2015… I can assure you that finding somewheres COLD will be relatively easy… as that is afterall the coldest month of the year in this Hemisphere.
If you want ideas on some great Winter Destinations… depending on HOW COLD you are looking for, I can help you out with that. Drop me a PM, or create a NEW topic here on WBee.

We’re stopping in St. Maarten next week on our honeymoon cruise! We have a private tour scheduled, and then I think we’ll just explore the rest of the day.
