awesome! I had a stand in ring for when we were out and about and snorkeling and such. Then I switched to my real ring when we went out at night :D
@brandonsbride - yes, exactly! i loved that i could wear this cheapy ring out swimming and everything and not really worry about it.
Funny story - My bff's hubby bought her a stand-in to wear while hers was getting soldered. We were all at the mall and he snuck off to Macy's. He asked the jewelry c;erk where their wedding and E-rings were, and they got all eager and started showing him their fine jewelry. He was like "oh, no.. I was looking for something for like $20." They gave him a super dirty look and rolled thier eyes at him as they pointed him to the cheap jewelry rack. Too funny.
Then he came back and slipped a gigantic fake rock on her finger... it was super cute :) and like you she got tons of compliments on it when she wore it.
I think this is a great idea! I have thought about doing it a number of times, but never pulled the trigger. I think the next time we travel I'm going to do it!
It's just so hard to leave my beauties at home - I feel incomplete without them now :(
I was thinking of doing this too! I can never tell if someone's ring is real or fake so why not? I was just gonna go to macy's and get one, or even claire's!
I've got a stand-in ring as well. I think it's a great idea for traveling abroad.

I just wanted to share the ring that I purchased for my honeymoon; it was a solitaire CZ with a yellow gold setting; about "1 ct" - just eyeballing it and cost $14 @ Nordstrom Rack!
I got compliments on it our whole trip, so much the the point that hubs commented, "...so, I could have just got you a $14 ring?" Hah! But really, it looked very different than my real e-ring and wedding ring, so it was kinda fun to just go along with it when people asked to see it.
So, if you didn't feel 100 percent comfortable taking your ring with you, you can do what I did and wear a stand-in =)
