Hi Bees. I really like my job for the most part, and I’m on a great team. But I’m a little concerned over blending in “too much”. For the most part, I work in a team of two, and occasionally 3 if our supervisor gets involved. My position is slightly “above” my team member, but we both report to the same supervisor.
My concern is that we often get lumped together, so if I have a project that I handled alone, we both end up getting credit/thanked for it, etc. On the surface level, this is no big deal, but I don’t want it to affect my career advancement in the future within the company. Our desks are right next to each other (and we get along very well, so no issue there) but if I want to talk to my boss about an idea or a project or anything, my team member always chimes in/interrupts me (which truly ticks me off), and it really gets aggravating– especially because my supervisor doesn’t seem to notice. Our positions were initially supposed to be slightly different (just on the same team) and we end up being treated the same.
I’m not sure how to stand out besides doing my best, especially since my supervisor/other bosses don’t seem to notice a problem. Maybe they don’t, because the work is getting done, after all. I know I’m a valued member of the team, and I love my job and coworkers. I just don’t want to be stuck or be professionally tied to someone else, especially when I do a lot of work!
