So DH and I plan to start to TTC in May. I still have six months left on my BCP prescription, but have decided not to refill it after this month. I started the last pack last night, which means three weeks to no more hormonal regulation. When we first started talking about this I was super excited and now I'm kind of terrified!

When I went off the pill previously (for no reason other than not wanting to take hormones anymore) I was fine for awhile, but then my hormones went super wonky and I got terrible acne and uncontrollable mood swings just before/during AF. I'm so scared this is going to happen again. I got lots of tests done at the time, because I was worried I might have hormonal imbalances or PCOS, but everything came back normal.

Anyone else terrified about going off BCP? If you've done it already, was it better or worse than you expected? What kind of BC did you use? I figure we'll use condoms, which I'm not looking forward to....we don't want to NTNT because I have a big trip to Europe planned in May and wouldn't want to try to tackle that in the first trimester if we happened to conceive between now and then.

Very exciting!!!! Going off BC was better than I expected in some ways (increase sex drive, less moody during normal times of the month...) and worse in ways (some increased acne, and crazy long cycles). It's a good idea to go off now for May, and start taking a prenatal ASAP!

@hergreenapples:  Yayyy, thats so exciting :) I got off BC in June of 2011, and started TTCing in Sept. I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen, as well as Yaz at some point, for over 11 years. When I got off, I did not notice any immediate effect, but within 2-3 months my skin went CRAZY. I felt like a teenager. It was aweful, but within about 2-3 more months, it started clearing up and now it is perfectly fine. I also noticed much heavier periods (my periods on the pill were light spotting, and now I get 2-3 days of heavy to medium bleeding), as well as increased cramping and backaches. Nothing too major. I am so glad I got off it before we started TTCing so that my body could regulate somewhat. After being on it for so long, who knows how long it takes ones body to get back to normal. As far as what kind of BC we used from June to Sept, we just used the pull out method and that obviously worked for us.

Sounds like we will be TTC at the same time. We were actually thinking June because we have a big big wedding to go to at the end of May, but I am on the second week of my last pack!

I am also kind of scared . . . my body works so well on the pill! LOL. I have only been off the pill one time for two weeks in the past ten years and I had terrible hot flashes. Hopefully my body will be able to figure itself out after a few months. I'm looking forward to an increased sex drive and (maybe?) some help dropping these last five pounds. Who knows.

I have been on BC for about 10 years and just took my last pack a month ago.  I have noticed an increased sex drive but I also noticed I am a little more emotional if a sad song comes on or something is sweet I tend to cry about it!  BUT that could be stress of the wedding day too :)  I am hoping to TTC in May/June as well! Good luck, it'll be fine when you body adjusts...

exciting and good luck!! i finished last pack of bc in late january and feel pretty ok so far, except for some minor skin problems (nothing like when i was a teenager!) and maybe i am a little bit more prone to headaches. will be interesting to see how long it takes before my cycles are back to normal!

Thanks for all the replies - it's nice to know how many of us are in this together!

I'm grateful that some of you also pointed out the positives: getting my cycle in order before TTC, maybe increased sex drive (that would be nice), and I'm also excited to be able to start charting.

Good luck to all the bees who plan to start TTC in the spring/summer. It's so nice to have a place to go where we can talk about the ups and downs of all things TTC related!

Just out of curiosity . . . any of you about-to-be-TTC Bees have an irrational fear that you might be barren? I know that the likelihood of it is not good but it seems like all I hear about anymore is infertility and Clomid and IVF and general problems.

    Here's hoping I'm fine . . . ?

Going off BC  for me was like walking into sunshine after being stuck under clouds for ages.

@daybyday:  Me!! I think about that all the time. Neither hubby or myself have any health issues, no reason to worry but yes ... that thought enters my mind a lot. A friend of mine who is now pregnant had the same (irrational) thoughts before TTC. I think it's normal to wonder about all the "what if's" .... :)

@hergreenapples:  I am anticipating AF this Friday. It's my first AF after ten years of hormones and let me tell you.... I am JUST as terrified as you. I've needed BCP for ovarian cysts over the years and started just before I began menstruating so I have NEVER had a non-hormone induced period. I am PETRIFIED of what to expect. My emotions have been allllll over the place, but I also have a lot going on (family problems, money problems, DW in 7 weeks, school, work, etc) so who knows what it's really from. I don't have much advice, but I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone!!!! And I feel better knowing I'm not alone either!!! Lol... Best of luck to you!

I went off about 3 weeks ago. I was on seasonale (periods every 3 months) for 6 years. I have to say, I feel awesome! My sex drive is off the charts. I've been charting since then and it looks like I ovulated on CD 22.

I've certainly had my fears about not being fertile. My mom had huge issues with it and needed to have a 10 hour surgery just to have me. I'm hoping I'm OK.

We are going to start TTC in April/May. I can't wait!!!

@daybyday:  totally - dh and i are both young and healthy, but we know so many couples who had fertility problems and seeing the sadness and stress it has brought to their lives and relationships really makes you wonder whether you'll be lucky or not... keeping our fingers crossed for all of us out here!!

@nhoh:  similar story here - it took my mom two years to conceive me! but i guess everyone is different and we have tons of other genes in us as well!
