Okay, well... the two easiest websites are blogger and wordpress. They both have a lot of functions. I have a blog on each. I have used xanga and livejournal, and while they're good, they're not as easy to "follow," like on blogger or via rss feeds/google reader.
There's a way to password protect your blog if you're worried about non-relatives seeing pictures of your baby, too much info, etc.
Think about keeping a running list of subjects to talk about, like updates you want to tell everyone about--the funny noises, stories, sleep-deprived things you've done, etc. I write all mine down as I think of them on a post it, then stick it by my computer so i remember it.
Good luck! Hope it's easier than constant emails!
I blog about our family so that family can see what we're up to. A lot of times it's all the stuff going on (kids activities, parties, etc.) other times it's stuff in my head. I also "copy blogs" I see a lot of others have great ideas and then I'll elaborate or make things my own (favorite movies, tuesdays top 3, stuff like that). Like LaborofLove said - as you get ideas, be sure to write them down. I have a whole bunch of draft blogs on my computer as ideas.

I'm thinking of starting a blog, mainly to allow our families to keep up with the new baby without me having to email 50 people every day. I know lots of ladies here blog-- give me some pointers? TIA!
