I've got my podcast downloaded, running shoes ready, and now I'm mentally preparing. I've never (NEVER) been a runner so this is all a new experience for me! DH is coming with me (I appointed him my personal trainer) and hopefully I'll be able to stick with it!

    Anyone else start running lately?

Good luck!  I have heard a lot of bees talking about the Couch to 25k plan.  I can't run because my asthma freaks out like crazy.

Good luck!  I have that app, but never used it!  I have started running on the treadmill again, and I must say...after it's over and my wish for death dissolves, I do feel pretty good about myself!  Running is definitely hard to teach yourself to like, but I hope to get there some day!

One of my best girlfriends started this program about a year ago, and she is still running and <gasp!> enjoying it!! As a non-runner, this is kind of hard for me to even comprehend :-) Hahaha...but seriously, she loves it and she looks great too!

Good luck! Hope you love it too!

@Krissy and Lily- Do it with me!! Let's bee buddies! ;)

I downloaded a podcast from www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html  that automatically changes the beats per minute in the workout music he mixes so you don't even have to think about the intervals... just run as fast as the music!

I'm on week 2 day 2 and it is awesome and interesting.  I did the app, which just allows you to play your own music, and then some dude comes on and says "Beeeeeep...run now."  It is awesome because I don't psyche myself out, I don't think  "oh god, I have to run again in 15 seconds..." i just do what the guy in my iPod tells me to.  Good luck, I think you'll LOVE IT!

Oh and one thing that helped me, if you have any shin muscle issues, watch the ABCs of running on you tube.  I guess a lot of people strike with their heel when they should strike with the ball of their foot.

And remember when you have a bad day running, that usually just means the next one will really be awesome.

Oooo... this sounds really neat.  I've always admired people who run, but never known how to "get into it" if that makes sense.

teaadntoast:  ME TOO, totally.  I have started running a million times, but would only do it like 2 days, and then quit.  I am in week two and there are no signs of letting up, and it is free!  If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, I would download an app for C25K.  It is amazing.  The most important thing are the rest days.  Seriously, if you follow the program, you will succeed.

    GOOD LUCK!

I'm on week 6! I was in such bad shape, and it's amazing that I can run for 20 minutes straight now.  It's still hard, but I can do it! I did a few days multiple times until I felt ready to move on.  I basically stuck with their plan though.  Good luck and just stick with it!

Hi Everyone! Well, my hubby and I did W1D1 today. I'm not gonna lie, it was not easy. I did a little more than half of the intervals, then walked the rest of them. I'm not sure if I had been running on a treadmill or track if I would have done better. There were some gradual hills throughout our course. Can anyone recommend a good stretching regime too? Thanks! We're running again on Friday. :)

I wouldn't recommend static stretches.  Do some high knees and butt kicks and arm circles to stretch and get your heart rate up.  It is harder to run outside than on a treadmill, but you'll get used to it.  It's not easy at the beginning, but it does get better. :)

Good for you! My dad is a huge runner, so I always attempted to get into it but it wouldn't last long. Two years ago some of my co-workers and I did the couch to 5K after work and it was a huge success! I have run at least 20 races since with my dad.  It's a great way to get started! Good luck!

A bunch of people I work with just started doing this, and we're all planning on running in a 5K as part of AIDS Walk Boston!  I haven't tried this yet, but just started a bootcamp regimen, and am looking forward to adding in more running to my schedule!  :)

Good for you! I started the program last year. The first day I was LITERALLY seeing stars... even though you never have to run for more than 60 seconds! That should show you how bad I sucked haha. I stuck with it though, had to repeat some weeks... but by last August I was able to run 30 minutes without stopping. I'm really not sure I've ever been that proud of myself... and I passed the bar exam! lol.

Unfortunately I then stopped running when it got cold. I'm back at it now and its coming sloooowly. But just knowing I"m CAPABLE of doing it makes a huge difference.

I start week two today, I was just wondering if anyone else who has done the plan still worked out on the off days...I probably wouldn't run or anything, but I have been so good biking six miles to the gym and lifting and biking back, I hate to have to stop that.  thanks!

I just did W3D1 this morning and am loving it so far.

Stephiemarie--I alternate doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred (Level 1 since that's all I have free on demand) and C25K and it's working well for me.

Y'all should become fans of C25K on Facebook...it's great motivation, they have running/nutrition tips, etc.:

I just went running for the first time today, I was out for about an hour and only ended up running for about 15-20 mintes worth, but it's better than nothing! What is the Couch to 5K?

This sounds really gross, but whenever I start running, my nose does too and then I can't get very far since I can't breathe very well. Am I the only one with this problem?

You inspired me to start the program! So I ran today... little did I know we're in the middle of a HEAT WAVE and it was 97 degrees!  But I still ran, so do I get brownie points in workout heaven?

@sararocks, the couch to 5k program is a set program that gets you running a 5k in like, 10 weeks or so. i can't remember the exact length. it's a great program for intro runners like myself. you slowly build up the length of time you run over the weeks so you don't get discouraged with running and it keeps running fun. it's really a run/walk type of program and i love it. you should definitely look into it!

this is a great program...I did this myself a few months ago and ran my first 5k in February (made it the whole way through running)  It was my first 5k...I was never a runner so I was pretty proud of myself to be able to get through it.  I am still running quite a bit, but focusing on hill intervals right now..I do want to start in on longer distances though so I can have my go at a 10k

Congrats!  I've heard it's a great program!  I also started running around December 2009 to help boost my weight loss (I'm a WW devotee) and became totally addicted! I also found a friend to run outside with me on the weekends and we actually did our first 5K about a month ago!  It was such an awesome feeling of accomplishment to cross that finish line.  Good luck and stick to it, no matter how much you want to quit.  The way I keep myself motivated is to focus on the fact that 40 pounds ago, I couldn't so much as run to the mailbox and now I feel great after a run ... chase those endorphins!

week 1 day 2. Work got in the way so my first week will be extended but its going ok, added some squats in as well on the days I couldn't run.

Should I be posting this on the workout buddies thread or is this ok?

@ktbrady- i think this thread is okay... I recognize it! I've never been in the workout buddies thread...

I was due to run today but didn't :( But I went on Friday and it was better than the time before!!

My new mantra is "I can do anything for __ minutes!"  I listen to a podcast that tells you when to run and it's 29 minutes long... the first 10 minutes are easy... then I have to push myself!

"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run." --John Bingham
