Your (liquid) feedings should be the #1 priority. They say that solids are just for fun at first and should not replace breastmilk or formula.
I found that my son did not tolerate rice cereal at all, but did really well with oatmeal and mushed up bananas.
Yeah we started with rice cereal and now are experimenting with oatmeal which she seems to like. So did you start by giving them the solids either right before or right after the liquid feeding? Or give them the solid inbetween liquid feedings? I think she threw up because she had too much to eat in general.
We are about to start solids this week or next, so I can't say from experience, but the advice I read that makes the most sense to me is that I am supposed to breastfeed first (complete meal) then solids (for fun/practice/texture) until the first year. Also, I'm going to try feeding first meal of the day so I can watch for allergies during the day. At least for awhile, until I feel comfortable. I'm freaking out about the change of quantity and smell of poop. ... *There are a lot of contradictory opinions in nutrition and parenting!!
well my number one rule was no solids until they could walk. After that, it was brown rice in the food processor until soupy with some breast milk in it to make it like cereal. Brown rice is more healthy and easy to tolerate. And they got it at breakfast for a month, then we upped it slowly after that.

Hey momma bees! This post is not at all intended to be a debate about when to start solids I just needed a bit of advice.
Kayla will be 5 months old in a few days and we were going to try to give her cereal for a second feeding today. We've been giving her a very small amount of cereal at night for a few weeks and she's taken to it very well. We usually give her the rice cereal before our bedtime routine and than about 30 minutes later give her a 5 oz bottle of breastmilk/formula. When we tried to give her a second cereal feeding today, I fed her immediately after giving her the cereal and she has spit up a lot!!
She used to spit up a ton when she was littler and was finally growing out of that, although the past couple days have been a little bit worse (which i was attributing to teething/thrush combination...which sucks :) ). My question is, do I keep breastfeeding her normally every 3-3.5 hours just add the couple sittings of cereal in or do I replace a feeding with a cereal feeding? I'm so confused how to transition to a combination of cereal/breastfeeding. Exclusively breastfeeding was so much easier :) Thanks in advance for any advice!
