I would start your search online. Brides.com or theknot.com has galleries of dresses, and you can search.
I got my dress at The Wedding Touch in Frazer (Chester County area) and it was under $1000... I know they have a nice range of affordable gowns and I had such a great experience there. Very nice people!
I'm in the same boat! I was going to start my search in Delaware because well, it's TAX-FREE! I've heard great things about Brides and Grooms in Newark. http://www.bridesandgroomsinc.net/
Good luck!
ETSY!!! Oh man, I plug etsy so often they need to start paying me! ;p But seriously, I am getting my gown custom made on etsy for less then $400 and it is amazing looking! I am going through Cici Bridal, but if you simply plug in "wedding gown/dress" in etsy search, you'll find hundreds of beautiful dresses for $500 or less!
Just like Cupcake, I got my wedding dress at The Wedding Touch in Frazer, Pa. It was a great experience. The price was under $900 and they are such nice people to work with.
I did my search on line and through magazines. I read a lot of good things about netbride.com here on weddingbee and other wedding blogs, and I was able to find my Da Vinci dress there for $400 cheaper than at a bridal salon in NYC. I highly recommend netbride.com!
You basically e-mail them the dress you want, and if they carry it, they send you a quote. They don't carry every brand, but they do carry a lot.
I think that those J.Crew dresses are more unique than you think. Although there is a lot of talk about them, I have yet to see a bride wearing most of them. I've seen brides wearing the sophia and the goddess gown, but that is it.
I say, if you are on a budget and want something that is good quality, definitely go with J.Crew. You can even check out ebay. You'd be suprised what you would find on there in terms of brand new J.Crew dresses.
Also, check out BCBG if you want something simple.

Hi ladies,
I've been lurking here for a while and am always impressed with all the info you have to offer!
I am getting married in September and am thinking I should start keeping my eyes open for a dress. I've been down this road once before, and spent a small (or large!) fortune on a custom gown. I'm older, wiser (and paying for my own wedding) this time, so I'm looking for something waaaaaaay less expensive. I really don't care for the bridal chop shops like David's, and am thinking of ordering a J Crew dress, but would love to fnd somehting a little more original. Any suggestions for where to start? The bridal salon's I've looked up all seem too costly... I'd love to keep it to $500 or so, if possible, but still find something elegant and tasteful.
Thank you!!
