What's your budget? Magnetstreet.com has some pretty awesome STD magnets. I ordered mine from there. I got about 175 for around $100 (using a coupon)!
EDIT: I know you said diy, but this was just an idea if your diy will be more expensive.

Wondering which would be best for a diy magnet STD...
I've been looking at magnetic sheets, but they seem to be somewhat expensive and have only a few sheets in a pkg (if anyone knows of a good deal, please share!). These would also cut out the need to be backed onto cardstock...
I also just started thinking about putting a small magnet strip or two somewhere on the back of the photo, but not sure how I'd manage the logistics, ie. photo paper attached to cardstock, with magnet behind it? Is there another type of material that would give the glossy feel, and be thick/sturdy?
Any suggestions are appreciated!
