Save-the-dates have only just recently become popular. Unless you have a lot of guests that will be coming from out of town or you are having a destination wedding, they really aren’t necessary; however, it is a nice notification for those of your guests that like to plan early. They are not mandatory.

Definitely not. I think they’re becoming more common now (as engagements seem to be longer) but they’re not required. They’re certainly helpful if it’s a destination wedding or a lot of folks are traveling, but it’s nothing a quick ‘heads up’ email won’t accomplish. If there’s another event in town that will take up hotels or if you’ve got family/friends who are coming from a ways away, maybe just drop them a line to make sure they can plan ahead if it requires travel.

Not at all. A lot of our guests actually think they are our invitations, so I don’t think anyone will notice if you don’t.

I printed some of my own and only sent them to our out of town guests. That way if they wanted to come, they would have enough time to request off work (if needed) and make travel arrangements. But people who live in town didn’t get one.
