It would be great if you had a firm plan before sending them out beyond just the date, especially if your wedding will involve travel to a destination and expense like a cruise. That way, people not only save the date, but they can also start saving money for the trip and reserving early to get good travel deals. So I would make your decision asap as to location of your wedding and then send out the STDs very soon - maybe at the New Year to avoid getting lost in the holiday card shuffle. People with destination wedding plans often send them out once the date is within a year and that's where you are now.
I would send them out fairly soon. I think the typical suggestion is 6-12 months, and since you're planning a destination wedding, earlier is likely better!

I would ditto that you should send them soon, however I'd suggest sending them right after Christmas. People are so busy right now, and they're so much mail in the system that it either might get lost or overlooked by your guests.
We're sending them right after New Years.
I agree with CHK, right after Christmas seems like an ideal time. I'd just make sure you have all the details of time and place 100% set before you do so - you don't want to have to send a correction later!
First, finalize your plans so you can actually put the location of the wedding on your save the dates. If its a DW or OOT, you'll want people to accommodate their schedules accordingly.
Then, send the save the dates. I'd wait unti lafter the holiday card rush (so maybe, February?)

So FI and I have decided on a date for the wedding which is November 21st, 2010 but thats about it. I was just wondering when we shouldstart sending STDs? We have been contemplating the idea of a cruise wedding, and most likely it will be a destination wedding. Just worried that we will send them too early and people will stick it on the back burner or that we willsend them too early and people wont be able to make it. HELP!
