@Nel13:  I am dropping off my dress to be steamed at the boutique on the monday before my wedding. I am picking it up on the Thursday before the wedding.

I would call the place you are planning on having it steamed and ask them what they typically do.

They will tell you how to store it and make sure it doesn’t get wrinkled again.

I would suggest it would be steam a day before or maybe two days and they will tell you how to care for it

I steamed it myself (actually my mom did it for me) the night before the wedding. If you’re doing it yourself, don’t underestimate the time it takes! Took her about an hour for a 3-layer dress. Then it has to hang, ideally not touching anything, while it dries (it’s slightly damp from the steam). We hung it on a hook that goes over the top of a door, that has a bunch of notches for different items. We just hung it on the one furthest from the door and it wasn’t touching anything. She touched it up again in the morning, and brought the steamer to the venue and steamed the back again before the ceremony — we had been sitting in the limo and had already taken a whole bunch of pictures etc by that point.

This is going to sound crazy…I never got my dress steamed beforehand. I had a steamer with me in case there were any huge and eye catching wrinkles, but I never ended up using it. Even if that baby had been pristine in the bag, it would have been back to looking imperfect again after putting it on and taking the bridal portraits not to mention riding in the car to the venue!

I’m not suggesting that you go down the same road – just sharing my experience. Cheers!

@Nel13:  My mom and I steamed my dress at home the day before my wedding. It took us about 1hour or so to finish it and it was nice bonding time for us girls. I just let it hang from the top of the door on a wood hanger and it was good to go the next day.
