Yikes! A friend of mine is getting married next weekend and her travel agent just moved their whole trip to Domincan Republic for them. That's it, no iffs ands, or butts!
I hope you don't get sick! I might still take a mask wtih me to be safe for airplanes/streets, etc. Don't let people touch you! Eek. An N95 or whatever the higher tech ones are that filter out the microbials should be safe
We're flying to Mexico for my bachelorette part in mid-July. I am hoping everything will return back to normal soon.
I should also mention that we are booked on American Airlines and they will not change/refund our flights for the dates we are going. They are only offering a change option for people traveling in May.
My friends are going to Cancun next weekend! They thought about changing, but weren't able to so they are just going to risk it. They will probably have the whole resort to themselves! :)
We are going to Excellence Playa Mujeres at the end of May, May 25! We were going to switch to a new location, but things are calming down in Mexico. And in fact, my travel agent just got back from there (this past weekend) and said it was fine. No one had masks on, was sick or anything. She used hand sanitizer religiously, but no one appeared sick. I think we'll be fine. Just use normal caution before eating, etc. And I will be taking some TamiFle with us in case we do feel ill!
I think you are a brave soul.
people die from the flu every year in the US, and that doesn't keep you from leaving the house does it? the swine flu is the media darling of the moment, and it sounds scarier, but the only people hospitalized from it in the US are in the same categories as people who are hospitalized from a seasonal flu; the very young, very old, or those with compromised immune systems.
just use the same precautions you would use with any flu. wash your hands or use sanitizer, don't touch your eyes, mouth or nose with your hands, and stay away from people who are sick.
you'll be fine - have a great trip!
listen everybody!!! i'm mexican!!! i don't have swine flu!!! and it isn't like the news are saying!!! it is totally safe to travel to mexico. I agree, it's a new virus and you need to be careful whetever you are, this virus is now all over. I live in sonora, mexico and we only detected ONE swine flu case, it's is not that dramatic and tragic as the news are put in it on, so travel and enjoy!!!!!
I'm so over this swine flu situation... like djmaddiebluedog said, you wouldn't hide in your home during regular flu season, would you?
We thought about canceling and going to DR instead, but I'm glad we waited, because it does seem to be getting better in Mexico, and now our resort only has a 28% occupancy rate. Free upgrades and no fighting for prime spots at the pool. We'll be there May 27th, can't wait!!
My parents are going in June to Mexico City and Cancun. I'd be right alongside them if I could go. Seriously, what, 100 people have died from it? Less than 200? Yawn. Sure, I'd bring my Purell, but wouldn't think about canceling my trip.
hmurphy19 - have so much fun! We went there for our honeymoon too... Loved it!
I agree with everyone who is saying to go. My fiance and I are going to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico next weekend on our honeymoon and I am not worried at all. Just do things that you should be doing anyway- wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer. You don't need to go crazy and wear masks...those are just to help people feel better mentally. When we were researching other places to go besides Mexico, I quckly realized how pointless it was because Swine Flu is everyone. I mean should I be fleeing Houston right now- cases keep popping up everywhere?
Have a great time in Cabo!
Yah May 23 brides! I'm another one!
I haven't booked a honeymoon yet. I'm thinking about doing a minimoon to mexico. Should be good prices. And they need our tourist money and will be thrilled to have us!
People die of the flu every year in the US. How many of us get the recommended flu shots?
I live outside of NYC and work in NYC. We have swine flu here. They shut down more schools last week. Everyone is still going to work, no one is wearing masks. I'd be happy to stay home from work, but guess what, they aren't going to pay me to do that!
There are valid concerns, read about the 1918 flu. I wouldn't go if my immune system was compromised.
LOL, As an ER Nurse I see panic every day. It is highly contagious but it is the flu. Its nothing like SARS. On the other hand a lot of airlines are cancelling their flights out to Mexico so I would be worried about not getting money back if they cancel your flight.
We went to Cancun (Excellence Playa Mujeres) on our honeymoon (April 27th to May 3rd) That was right at the start of the panic. We considered canceling our trip for about 5 minutes. Then we realized if we didn't go, we wouldn't get a vacation. So we went. Our resort was immaculate, and we didn't notice a single person (guest or employee) that was sick. Our only concern was the airport going home. So, we were super careful. Plenty of handwashing, etc. Oh, and I brought Lysol wipes to wipe down my seatbelt and tray on the plane... Everyone here in the States was freaked out, so we both got an extra week of vacation when we got home (bonus!) Neither of us got sick and the trip was amazing, so going was the best decision we made during the entire wedding planning process!
Also, please remember, it's the flu. IF you get sick, you'll be sick for a week, but you will survive. The exception (possibly) being, if you are immuno suppressed from some other medical condition.
p.s Wearing a mask won't prevent you from getting the flu. The virus is small enough to pass through the mask. The best way to prevent yourself from getting sick is to wash your hands, plain and simple.
My daughter and her husband will still go to Riviera Maya (El Dorado Resort) on 6-1 . At the time that all this was on the news, their travel agent suggested they not cancel. They felt it would all pass and sure enough it has. They could have gotten a full refund too. They will still be cautious, but I'm sure they will have fun! Don't you know they will!
We're flying to Cancun in a couple weeks to stay at ME Cancun Hotel. Prices have been really low since the whole swine flu media-frenzy. As alwyays, the media has blown this thing out of proportion. Once thing is for sure, we 're gotten a great deal as a result.
We still headed down to Playa del Carmen in a couple weeks and are not worried at all. My suggestion is do the same as any other out of the country trip, check with your local Travel clinic and make sure you are up to date on shots and ask about any pre-existing medical conditions and how they might be effected. We'll just use common sense flu precautions. The one suggestion we were given that I hadn't thought about was to not have ice with your drinks on the flight home since the water originated in Mexico (although that's all the time, not just for H1n1 prevention).

Hi Hive!
When the swine flu scare hit the media in the last few weeks we were panicked and started to look at other options for our June honeymoon to Mexico. Now that it appears to be a little less severe in Mexico (and now that it is all over South Carolina anyway) we are going to Cabo as planned. I'm curious if anyone else is still going to Mexico for their honeymoons?
