My wedding is on June 29, 2012…I am extremely stressed out about finding my dress because I am so busy with my masters. I have been trying on dresses here and there since end of August with no luck!!! (too picky and kind of all over the place). All the shops are telling me I need to order it ASAP since it take 8-9 months to order and alter the dress…for it to be ready.
Did anyone stress out same way I did? if you are passed it…any advice?! I can’t go to try on dresses again till end of October because midterms have begun. I dont know what to do.
Sigh. I guess I am looking for some type of support…
Thank in advance. 🙂

8 to 9 months? That seems extreme. I’m getting married Memorial Day weekend and I have yet to be wedding dress shopping, so you’re way ahead of me, haha. Don’t strss out — I think 6 months should be plenty of time to order a dress. I’ve had friends who were only engaged for 8 months and ordered their dress 5 months out and it was no problem at all 🙂

It usually takes about six months for a dress to come in, so even if you order at the end of October, you’ll still have time. Stop stressing! You’ll know the right dress when you see it on yourself – don’t let any shop pressure you into buying until you’re 100% certain.
P.S. It’s nice to see another Ottawa bride on the boards!

What all do you like? And how much would you like to spend? I’m going to guess that most of the people on here have looked at A LOT of dresses and maybe we could help make suggestions!!!

If you’re ordering a dress that’s going to made in China, they definitely seem to need 8+ months lead time these days. A bridal shop owner in the area said that there have been some slow downs with certain brands lately. I’ve read about the same thing on the board.
Here was my strategy:
1. I made four appointments. The first store a little shop that carries Sottero, Casablana, Justin Alexander. I didn’t think it was my style walking in and I was right, but it was good to get that out of the way. The next three appointments were at nicer salons. I found 2 dresses at each that I liked. Never had the “a ha” moment, but I came to realize what designers were my favorites.
2. Once I figured out the designers I liked (Amsale, Rivini), I ignored everything else. I kept an eye on the preowned sites and stores that sold samples to see if any dresses were speaking to me.
3. When I found a pristene Amsale sample, I bought it on the spot. It’s on a shelf right now and I’ll have it altered in April or May for my June 1 wedding.
There is so much “noise” in bridal that I think you need to plow through and separate the wheat from the chaf. What designers or brands do you keep coming back to? What trends do you notice in the dresses you like? Plenty of brides find multiple dresses they like. Plenty never have the “OMG! This is THE dress!” moment. Are you beating yourself up because you haven’t had that moment?

@fromthestart: thanks! Weird I guess it takes longer to get certain designers in Canada…? I don’t know.
@HopefulInLove: Aw thanks! are you still looking for a dress as well? I love the drop waist dresses by Rosa clara… but i also love some of the unique lace gowns by Allure and Maggie Sottero. I fell in love with Abilene by Maggie but still waiting to try dresses by Allure and hopefully Rosa Clara…the one I fell in love with through just pictures, was Acacia from her 2012 collection. However, my budget is 2000 so…:(
@Shosha1: OOh you are from Ottawa! And I saw that you bought your dress! Congrats I love Maggie Dresses! Did you get it from Ottawa too?? You look very beautiful. 😀 Where are you having your wedding and when!? As for my dress…yeah…shops have been nice not exactly pressuring…but just…letting me know I need to order soon. Sigh. I think you are right I have a bit more time still. Here is to hoping I find something next time (which will be Montreal!) Thanks by the way!
@Jeannine @ Small Chic: you are so right!! I have been slowly narrowing it down. But just when I do that I find other designers I am falling in love with. lol. You were right on the dot when you said I am beating my self up for not having that moment with a dress. I thought every bride is supposed to have that moment. But I imagine you have to be right…it isn’t possible for every bride to feel that way about a dress. I need to relax a bit…Thanks a lot for the pointers I will be keeping those tricks in mind. Next good store I find I will think of going back to it and just finding a dress and that is that.

I didnt have the “a ha” moment, but the dress I got by far topped all of the other dresses I tried, it had everything I wanted, and was in my price range. No tears for me, (I’m not much of a cryer anyway) but just by the gasp my mom and aunt and grandmother made, I knew it had to be the one I purchased! It literally took their breath away.

I went through about the same thing. I had tried on approximately 100 dresses. I finally went to the largest bridal salon I have ever seen. They had over 1,000 dresses and had $20,000 dresses in the lobby. I walked in there resigned to not finding a dress. I claimed that I would probably never cry and never find the dress and have to settle. Five dresses into the appointment, I was proven wrong. I cried like a baby when I put the dress on. There is a perfect dress out there for everyone. My advice: go somewhere that has a large selection that is a salon not a megastore. The place I went was huge but had the feel that they were solely focusing on you. You will find your dress. Good luck!

I’m in Canada (Toronto) and I also haven’t ordered my dress yet. I have my eye on one but still haven’t decided and am not stressed at all. I will if January comes and i *still* haven’t ordered!
