Hi everyone! I have a story to share that has been bugging me, and I know you will understand better than most people.
I decided to buy a new ring setting for my original engagement ring at a well-known jeweler in my local area. They have an outstandingly good reputation. However, they told me my order would be completed by YESTERDAY (Monday). Today is Tuesday. I finally got somebody on the phone who would not give me the run-around and told me the ring hadn’t even been touched yet. REALLY? So, I went in there today and talked to the owner’s daughter. Supposedly, they are “very sorry” and will have the ring finished (AND APPRAISED) by closing time tonight. How about that? I really wouldn’t have been upset if I hadn’t been told the ring would be done by now.
They should have just been honest from the beginning. I’m really not a bad or jerky customer. (I’m a good one, haha!) Anyway, I can’t WAIT until later to pick that ring up and post a pic or two on here. This is the only day this week I’m even in town long enough to pick the thing up! I had my heart set on getting it no later than today, if it had to be off schedule at all. Do I sound unreasonable to expect people to just do the right thing and tell me the truth when I’m spending a lot of money on a new setting?
I realize most places take much longer than 5 days to get a ring set, but they promised me it would be done by yesterday. Then it still hadn’t been touched as of this morning.
Anyway, the owner’s daughter was amazing and professional. Lucky for them, because I would have cancelled the entire order–and I was prepared to firmly do so if they weren’t nice about it. I was almost ready to go somewhere else. I still hope I made the right decision to keep the order there. I could have easily gone somewhere else. I guess we’ll see if they come through. If not, it’s cancellation time, haha!

I don’t think you’re being rude at all… I have had stones set in rings that I dropped off and picked up ~45 mins later.

@Cupcake2012: Hi! Yes, I posted some pics. I tried using my nicer camera, but hthe iphone pics were actually coming out better. Not sure what’s up with that.
Anyway, I stopped in the store today and told the owner’s daughter I was really disappointed with all of the miscommunication. She apologized and got the job done for me by the end of the day–including the appraisal. It was awesome! I posted an update thread, but here’s a couple of photos. I’m very pleased with the outcome. Thanks for checking on me!

Now obviously I don’t know the details here, but I am a jeweler, so I can give you my perspective on the situation.
If your ring was being made from scratch, it takes time. And even if the jeweler started on schedule – to be quite frank – sh*t happens. The ring might have had porosity and needed to be redone, the setting might have needed to be altered based on the shape of your specific diamond, etc etc etc. And if your ring hadn’t been touched yet, we might assume that problems happened with the ring that was being made BEFORE yours. I don’t think anybody was really untruthful with you, I think they gave you a reasonable estimate and fell behind. They should have CALLED you and let you know, but I don’t think anybody told you a lie.
I try to gently remind my customers that at my store everything is handmade and it takes time to make it right. Every ring is different and presents its own challenges, and sometimes we fall behind because of a particular difficulty – we want to take time to make sure every piece is one that is going to last a lifetime. It’s not like ordering a pizza, lol. So I’m really sorry that this happened to you, and I hope you love your ring when you finally get it!
edit: and OMG it is gorgeous!

@tonights: Oh, I do have to tell you, they were at least “fibbing” to me along the way. I was seriously under the impression that all we were waiting on was the appraisal, as if the ring was already finished, only to find out from the final person that the ring had not been touched at all. That part rubbed me the wrong way more so than the ring taking longer. If they had just said it would take longer, I would have been way more flexible. Anyway, long story short, the family that owns that store turned out to be amazing. They have a great reputation and totally lived up to it today. I’ll definitely go back.
I appreciate your feedback, and believe me when I say I was not trying to be a jerk to them in any way, not even in tone while addressing the situation. I realize things happen. The scenario just didn’t sit well with me.
Thank you for the compliment! I love the ring. Next time I order something, I’ll automatically know it will take a while, haha. 🙂
