We had warnings to the north and to the south of us Sat. nite, but luckily they both missed us. Not so much for the little town of Reading, KS which is about an hour away from me and then to see the pictures of Joplin, MO, which is about 3 hours away is just so sad!! DH and I go there a couple of times a year and it is sad to see the stores that we go to that are no longer standing. Praying for each and everyone of them and their families that are affected!
@stormy9973:Shew, I HAVE to ask is it scary living in a state known as a" tornado" state if you will? Hubby & I was just talking about it today and about how scary it really must be! Do you guys ever hear the sirens going off? SHEW I wouldn't know what to think! YES, I to have been watching & it is sad and very scary to see!
The news about Joplin has been just terrible. I live about an hour and a half from there, and we had a few funnel clouds sighted, but there was no damage. Our local tourism website has started taking donations for the victims of the disaster.

Joplin's about 3 hours from where I am, 1.5 hours from FILs, though we had tornados of our own fairly close on a lake.
Honestly, growing up in tornado alley you get used to it and until the sirens start going off and the sky turns green, you just groan that the tornado warnings are interrupting your shows! Still, when I hear about the recent storms, I instantly think of the May 3rd devestation where tornados hit right where I'm sitting and typing this.
We're scheduled to get some storms over the next few days, hopefully nothing too destructive.
Wow, I don't know if I could ever get use to it. I may sound like a BIG baby. But a big storm hit here a few weeks ago a man who is 59 years old said it was the worst storm he had ever seen in his entire life so I KNOW it was bad for here. But anyways and I was home alone :/ Hubby was at work as he is on 2nd shift. It was around 9 pm when it hit, and my power went out and cell phone would NOT work. I didn't even know a storm was coming as I usually do. And with all the recent tornados I thought one was coming our way, I cried even! But I think what scared me the most was because it was PITCH black outside and it was lightning every 3 seconds , literally. :/ We was without power for around 3 days which isn't bad since some go weeks even months without it or WORSE without a home. I HATE being a big baby about storms but I just recently have been & know idea why. Even yesterday it barely stormed and I got scared with my hubby home. So maybe just that storm scared me? IDK, trees came down and everything that storm, so it was worse than I mde it sound but idk why every storm now scares me. :/
@Mrs.Estep:, just like elliestan said, you get used to it and where I live we rarely ever hear the sirens. But I have to admit, I was getting a little worried on Sat. nite, when they kept saying that is was on it's way and that it was 7 miles out and then 3. I had my downstairs closet cleaned out and put some water and flashlights and some blankets in there. We seem to luck out and a lot of people here say it is because we live in a valley and I would have to agree, especially since the 2 tornado spottings were heading our way and then split when it reached us!!
I'll agree with the PPs that you do get used to it. I grew up in IN and am now in TX so tornados and big, huge thunderstorms happen. I actually pulled up a chair on our balcony last night and was just sitting out there watching the storms. I LOVE a good lightning show!
That said, I do feel for the people who have lost homes/loved ones/etc. As much as I enjoy watching big storms and don't freak about about tornado warnings - I do recognise that they can cause a lot of destruction.
It's so heartbreaking, I grew up near Joplin and was in my hometown yesterday when it hit.
i was looking through picture people had posted to see if i could recognize anything. im roiginally from missouri so when i saw the walmart in shreds i freaked out. i used to stop there all the time on my way to grand lak of the cherokees and knowing that everything around the one picture i recognized was destroyed was pretty heartbreaking.
@cr6zy: Grand Lake was the one that I was referring to that had a tornado on it! I think it wiped out like 20 or 30 lakehouses :[
tornado sirens are going off, we have a "maxi-tornado" on the ground! wish me luck!!!
@Usuki: thank you thank you!! the giant one went just north of me and seems to be slowing down, but there's another (not as strong) headed for us - the lights are flickering, but obviously we still have power (knock on wood!). we're getting reports of babies trapped in rubble and missing children in the one that went just north of me :[. there's another grinder of a storm headed for where my brother and his fiancee live, hopefully that one will turn as well. blargh!
@elliestan: Wow, that sounds so horrible and scary. I can't really imagine what it must be like to be confronted by such a life threatening "thing" and having to worry about family and friends.
It's already 1 am here and i need to get some sleep. I'm not a religious person at all but from time to time i say a prayer and tonight i'll pray for you and your family to be safe!
there were tornados an hour away from me in north minneapolis. most of north minneapolis is in really bad shape now. A lot of poor people are homeless now.
My mom is in Irving, TX (nearish Dallas) and just texted that golf-sized hail has broken all of her apartment windows, as well as the back window of her car. Hope all of you in the danger zone stay safe tonight.
Hope everyone is okay. We are still under tornado watch, but it seems like everything will be okay.
I live in Kansas and have never really feared tornadoes until Saturday! We are under a tornado watch and FI and I have our tornado bags packed. Scary. My heart goes out to everyone who has been effected by the storms this past weekend and today. It is so tragic.
I haven't been effected, but, my heart goes out to everyone who has been. It's awful to see these towns just being destroyed. Everyone who's been effected will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I live in StL, so the last round of bad tornadoes (EF-4) in MO hit right in my neighborhood just a few weeks ago. I live less than a mile from Lambert Airport, which was ravaged and shut down in the last storm. It's nothing in comparison to what happened to Joplin, but still bad. I cannot remember a tornado actually hitting my neighborhood in my lifetime. Sure, they've hit around us, but never in my neighborhood. It's a scary thing.
We had a storm yeterday that knocked out our power (which was restored this morning) and are forecasted for more tomorrow.
Stay safe, you guys. We don't need anybody getting hurt around here.
I think the worst thing about this is how cavalier people are being. I had friends post on facebook before the last storm about how annoying the tornado sirens were and how they wished they'd stop going off. The comments on yahoo in a story about Joplin I was readin today were horrendous. They were all talking about how God was punishing us, or that God was punishing republicans for voting in the politicians who voted for the war.... I don't understand how people can spew hate at such a tragic time.
I live in IL and two days ago we had really bad storms. In a matter of a half an hour or so the sky was swirling around, the power was going in and out, and I was terrified. Tonight just hail.
I really hope everyone on here is doing safe!
The stories are heartbreaking! I wish everyone in tornado valley a safe night and week as it looks to be bad weather the rest of the week! I usually LOVE warm weather but this is making me miss winter, atleast the fall. Everyones stories are so scary and sad.... Prayers out to anyone and everyone effected!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s Maybe all this talk on the weather channel with all the stories/pictures and news about all these tornados/TRAGIC stories is what is making me so erie about storms!
I live in Joplin. The pictures and news does the actual images no justice. It's just crazy. Me and my sister were in Wal-mart on 15th Street when it hit, so we are nothing but LUCKY!!! I've lived around Joplin all my life and you get used to the tornado sirens and learn to think nothing of them. On Sunday, many ppl thought nothing of the sirens- it was Sunny and like 85 degrees. The sirens started going off just as we went into Wal-Mart and we thought absolutely nothing of it until it actually hit the store we were in. It was scary. We are up to 146 deaths. But apparently, once the tornado actually hit you could no longer hear the sirens anyway. The city of Joplin is nothing but amazing with all the volunteers and everything coming to help. It makes you appreciate everything that you do have. I am a nurse and right after the tornado hit, we were crazy busy and are just now slowing down from all the chaos. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers :)
@ashroehrs: That had to have been sooooo scary! I know thunder storms scare me now ah days since all this on the weather channel. The picture are so sad to see & I bet you are right that they don't even do it justice. :( Love to all who was effected and stay safe out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
