This is just something I witnessed and found disturbing and icky– I’d be curious to see what you all think.
For the last couple weeks, I was on an ecology field study trip to a foreign country with one of my (grad school) classes. The only man in the group was the professor (weird) until a colleague of his joined us a few days into the trip. This colleague (let’s call him Matt) was an attractive guy in his late 30s, with a great sense of humor and a lot of interesting knowledge. He has a partner, with whom he’d just had a baby a WEEK earlier. (Who leaves their partner a week after having a baby to go on a field trip with a class that’s all women????) And he was a pretty bad flirt– but only with certain people. He tried to flirt with me, but I mentioned my SO several times, and he backed off, thank goodness.
However, a number of my classmates and the TA all seemed to be a bit under his spell. One girl in particular started noticeably seeking him out. Let’s call her Rachel. One night, we were guests on someone’s homestead, and although we camped, the homeowner offered his kitchen for our use. “Matt” was going to cook dinner for everyone that night. Well, dinner took a looong time to be made, even though “Rachel” was in there helping “Matt” the entire time. . . and they kind of wouldn’t let anyone else in the kitchen. And afterwards, she helped him clean up, which was irregular as usually on this trip cooking and cleaning up were done by different sets of people.
As the days went on, I noticed that “Rachel” flirted with him more and more, and he seemed to bask in the attention. Finally, on the last day he was camping with us, they went kayaking together for the ENTIRE DAY, avoiding everyone else. Then, when they returned, they washed each other off (getting the salt water off), and proceeded to act like a couple for the rest of the day. That evening, everyone was sitting by our camping spot on the beach, drinking tequila, and I think both “Matt” and “Rachel” had a bit too much. As most of us wandered off to our tents, I saw the two of them on the water’s edge, and when she wavered he supported her. Then they sat down on the beach, really close to each other (his arm may have been around her, but I couldn’t see clearly) and talked for what seemed like hours– kept me awake. I heard that someone who was awake late that night noticed them walk down the beach in the dark and not come back until the wee hours.
URGH! They were at least emotionally involved, if not physically. EEW! It completely skeeves me out to think he was at least emotionally cheating on his partner, with whom he’d just HAD A BABY!! And the fact that “Rachel” didn’t stop herself from fawning over him when she knew full well about his partner and baby is gross too! I don’t get it. Why would they do that???
Sometimes the human species just confounds me. 😛 Any input or similar stories to share?
