So here’s the link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/17/joe-rickey-hundley-out-of-job_n_2708560.html?utm_hp_ref=crime
the jist is:
And old man harrasses a woman on a flight who has her adopted black child on her lap. The child is mixed race and he assumes it is her biological child.
Near the end of the flight the baby starts to cry. He tells her to shut her (n-word) child up. He then proceeds to slap the child and draws blood.
He receives simple assualt with a maximum 1 year sentence.
Is this enough? Should it be a higher level of assualt? Or is this a hate crime?
I personally think that in Georgia children are protected so he should get wayyyy more punishment than a year (perhaps not jail time all of it). If that was my baby there would have also been an assault on him.

Yeah I wondered how the mom just kind of stood there. I think I would have bitch slapped the guy. I would have been out of my mind pissed.
I mean, as scary as it is, it’s not aggravated assault.

a) he should get more punishment. b) if that were my child, that guy would’ve been face down on the floor in less than 5 seconds.

@subtlebee: This is a hate crime. He called the child a racial slur.. assulted the child and harrassed her the entire flight.
He need to put UNDER the jail. If I were that child’s mother I would be in jail for murder. NO one touches my child

I wonder what sentence would have been given if he were a different race.

I’m NOT quick to call hate crime on ANYTHING, I actually get so annoyed by people that automatically jump to that whenever there are 2 races involved in a crime. But I think this wouldn’t have happened if the baby wasn’t black. This man makes me sick and I can’t believe the mom didn’t do anything. I think I would have told someone next to me “hold my baby” while I kicked his ass.
ETA: That baby is so freaking cute!

Also if he was that crapfaced, couldn’t they slap a public intox on him too. Idiot.
That baby is adorable.
This story is as bad as the guy who didn’t want his baby taken care of by African American nurses. And the hospital actually listened to him for a month!

I dont think it was a hate crime though. I know he used the n word (and Im black) but there are many racist people. I just dont see this as a hate crime.

Slapping a child hard enough to draw blood means a huge amount of force. Plus, using a racial slur makes it a hate crime. This is a horrible crime, and I hope he’s charged with a hate crime.
Slapping someone is pretty consistent with what a simple assault is.

@deetroitwhat: even though it was a child and less is generally more there? what about the hate crime aspect? prior to striking the child he called him a n- baby

The fact that the assault took place during/immediately after this scumbags verbal racial slurs to me SCREAM hate crime.
I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a lawyer or paralegal and I’ve not even looked up the LEGAL parameters of a hate crime, but geez, if this doesn’t meet the bill, then what does?
Fired from his job (according to the AP), I also think he should be put in jail, and have a lifetime ban from the airline. Be forced into alcohol rehab and anger management.
If I had been on that flight, there would be an assault charge against me too. Absolutely reprehensible and revolting, this “man” slug, douchebag….

Here’s the story from our local news.
I think the most shocking part is that none of the crew members intervened and separated them before this happened…since it seems like (to me, anyway) that there was some disagreement before the actual slapping of the toddler!!

I’ve watched enough Lockup to know that this guy won’t have it easy in prison when the prisoners figure out what he’s there for.
WHO SLAPS A TODDLER?????
If there is some charge for using a disgusting racial epithet then that charge should be brought as well. He made it a race issue by using that word, so it’s completely reasonable that this should also be considered a hate crime.
