Just curious to see what kind of odd calls and texts you've all received.
A few weeks ago, I was getting ready to head home from work when I got a phone call from an unknown number, with an area code from a nearby city (I don't know anyone who lives there), and I ignored it. I was still at work and didn't have the time to answer. I typically don't answer unknown numbers and figure they'll text or leave a voicemail if it's really meant for me. A few minutes later, I got a voicemail. I left work and listened to it... it was a little kid, maybe 5 or 6, asking to speak to her grandmother.
I'm sure some of you have more entertaining, more outlandish stories than that one.
I used to get calls/voicemails from on older couple who were trying to call their granddaughter. We usually just laughed about it, but I felt really bad when they called and as soon as I answered they sang happy birthday to me... I felt awful when I had to tell them they had called me again, and not their granddaughter!
I get random voicemails and texts all the time. One VM was from a man saying something about a guy not wanting to settle. I am guessing it was a lawyer? Then I get texts from a number I don't know saying your friend"Michelle" wants you to see this link..... I will not answer them.
A looooong time ago when I had a land line, I got the weirdest call when I moved somewhere new and got a new number. The man asked for Janet, and when I said she was no longer at this number, he proceeded to talk to me! Apparently Janet was part of a party line or match up type phone service. Thankfully he backed off after I started talking about my then long-term BF.
I recently had an encounter where I was the one making the weird phone call. I am a teacher and was calling our local subbing company(everything is outsourced these days) and had written down the wrong area code! Instead of calling a town away in West Michigan, I accidentally called Trinidad & Tobago. Oops! The guy couldn't figure out who Lori was let alone why I wanted to add a district.
Back when texting was first popular, my dad would constantly get sexts from a random number he didn't know. He didn't know how to text back then, so the messages would go unanswered. After several months of random sexts, he finally went to the store to ask how to tell this lady to knock it off.
Ugh, today actually, I got a 5 am text from a local number that I didn't recognize. The text simply said "thong?" Usually I sleep fine through texts but ive been sleeping horribly this week, and it just happened to wake me up. After a few confused minutes, I texted back "No! And who is this? I'm going to kill you for waking me up at 5am! " Lol they didn't reply.
Since I've had my new phone number I get odd calls all the time. Once I got a call from a school about "my child" (and I have none). They kept calling and leaving voicemails until I finally answered and told them I didn't know what they were talking about. Also, I got this strange voice-text message from a guy trying to wish his mother a happy mothers day. Too bad, it was very heartfelt.
Many years ago, I got a couple of phone calls asking about my "services". From the questions they were asking (and the way they asked), it sure sounded like they thought they were calling a prostitute. My best guess is that our phone number was one digit different.
Once I was driving down a dark, unfamiliar road when the voicemail noise came from my phone. It never rang, was just a voicemail. It was this woman's voice, all frantic and wavering, saying "Goodbye!.....Goodbye!" and nothing else. It really freaked me out.
I wonder if she ever realized she had the wrong number.
A few years ago I got this crazy voice mail from some random guy..most of it was just a bunch of crazy rambling, and at the end he was making loud rooster noises. My sister and I couldn't stop laughing the first time I listened to it.
I've got one.
Last year I had applied to graduate school and was waiting for photo calls regarding interviews. So, I was in this room using an Ellison machine when my phone rang, and I answered it. It sounded like an older woman and she asked if she could speak to Inspector Campbell.
When I told my FI this story, he said in response, "Did you patch her through?"
I had a hilarious random text once too but I can't remember it anymore, sadly.
I got a vm from a guy the other day. He sounded kind of drunk and mumbly but I think he thought he had called his girlfriend. He was trying to apologize for something. I felt bad that she never got that voicemail. He seemed genuinely sorry for whatever it was he had done.
One time while I was still in high school I'd just gotten home from school and our land line rang. The lady on the other end of the line sounded very familiar but I couldn't place her voice. I asked who it was and she said, "It's Grandma!" I felt terrible and apologized. She started asking me about school, but it was weird - she was asking me about clubs I didn't belong to and people I didn't know. Finally I said, "Um, ma'am, what's your granddaughter's name?" We quickly established that we were total strangers, but we were both shocked at how much she sounded like my grandma and how much I sounded like her granddaughter! We just laughed it off and said goodbye. She was a nice lady but damn was that awkward!
The guy that lived in the apartment before us must have had a falling out with his folks and never told them he moved. They called and left sad messages for three years, even after we finally caught a call once and told them we'd been there for years. That was kind of sad. However, we could recite the entire "Aaaandrew, this is your moooother" message she left every time.
I also once got a sext from my mother. No amount of alcohol can make you forget that (particularly when your friends find it hilarious). *shudder*
I've got really odd 'romantic' texts and VM's from people significant others...not sure how people leave full on messages for someone without checking first!
I got one a couple years ago from someone in school asking me to wire money to her account. I texted her saying who is this and she answered asking who I was so I told her that she texted me so she should tell me who she is. Never heard from her again.
I get calls/voicemails from a local number playing instrumental music. Once it was James Bond theme music on my VM for like five minutes. I googled the number and other people get the same musical calls from the same number.
This is kind of the opposite, but one time I was trying to call my friend (she had just moved to my area from CA) and this lady picks up and starts yelling at me and saying that I keep calling her all day and night etc etc. But I swear it was the first time I had ever dialed that number.
I used to get calls for a pizza place from tons of people. I wonder if they had my number before I did or something because it was all the time.
When Bruce Almighty came out in theaters they showed a phone number on the screen that was 776-xxxx and that number actually belonged to a guy I went to school with. His parents had a VM message that said they were sick of the prank calls and God did not live there. lol They changed it to a 555 number before the dvd release.
Once at work I got some woman asking what to do with a kid they didn't want. She sounded like she was strung out. I kept repeating that she had the wrong number, and so on. I did manage to give her the cps number before she hung up on me. It was kind of scary and I don't know who she was.
i used to get long texts regarding Jesus in Spanish.
When my BFF and I were about 14 or so she had a vm from a man who was profusely apologizing to his wife. He went on and on and on and then he started telling her all the things he wanted to do to her while they made up. We laughed so hard and would use some of the lines although I don't remember them anymore. He called back and we told him he had the wrong number. However he didnt believe us and thought we had stolen his wife's cellphone. It was actually the phone for her parents house so I guess when he called the cops on us he had to believe when they told him wrong number!
I used to get these long and rambling voicemails from somebody telling Tom that swim team practice was going to be at 6:30 and could he pick up the oranges before practice, etc. etc. They were several minute long messages 1-2x/wk so you'd think he would've figured out Tom wasn't getting the messages when the oranges weren't at practice that night and he also forgot to pick up the end of the year trophy collection. I got a kick out of the calls but after over a year of this I finally answered one day and broke the news that I was not actually Tom and had never been Tom. The man was completely shocked and very apologetic, lol. Haven't received another call since.
For a while my number was one off from a suicide help line and it only took a few months before I had to have it changed. The first call I got, I had no idea what was going on. I picked up and this woman was sobbing, so I didn't want to hang up on her or ask where I knew her from. She calmed down pretty quickly, so I hopefully I helped? i got two more that I didn't answer, but I was so afraid that I would have a suicide recorded on my voicemail one day that I changed my number.
The last time was about a month ago, I got a call saying [some person's name I don't remember] was really upset and needed me. I was like... what? And the person was like "so-and-so is your friend, and she really needs your help right now" and some other things. And I was like "...I'm sorry, I don't know [person]...?" And they kept insisting! And I was like "uhhh... I'm really sorry, but have no idea what you're talking about. I don't know anyone by that name." We did this a couple times, in so many words. Eventually they gave up, seemingly frustrated. I was about to be all "I mean I can talk to the person, I just don't have any idea who this is..." lol. I just wanted to make it clear I had no idea what was going on or who it was. I wasn't unwilling to talk to anyone... I was just so freaking confused!
That and I've gotten random photos. Once, I got one of a little girl holding a flower in an apartment, smiling at the camera, with a caption "she really loves her gift..."
And another photo I recently got was of someone's back yard deck. It was kind of grungy, nothing special, and like a chair or something was halfway off the deck. No caption. I was like... why would anyone send this picture for any reason? lol
Cell phones are fun.
I get alot of butt dials. Or people from numbers I don't know breathing into the phone. Creepy.
Me: Hello?
Stranger: (Angrily) Who is this?
Me: I'm sorry but you're the one calling my home.
Stranger: You called me at 8:26. What do you want?
Me: I'm sorry, you're mistaken. No one could've called you from this house.
Stranger: Yes, you did! Don't you ever call me again! (Hangs up)
WTF??
Not so long ago I got a call from the bank offering me cell phone contract (Banks sell a variety of products in France). I explained to the lady that I was satisfied with my current service but she cut me off and started speaking to me in "Spanish" because of my foreign name and my light accent when speaking her language. Let's just say that her Spanish skills left a lot to be desired. I cut her off and told her that I speak French just fine, I didn't need her services and wished her a wonderful day.
I once received a picture message of a baby with the message "this Mel's baby". I texted back "cute baby, but you have the wrong number!"
I used to get calls from a collection agency all the time asking for some guy. Those finally stopped about a year ago.
The best ever though happened about 2 months ago when I got a call from my doctor's office asking if I would be there soon. I had no idea what they were talking about since I had just had an appointment about a week before. After going back and forth with them for a little, they finally figured out that they had meant to call another patient with my first name whose phone number was one digit off.
I once got an extremely irate woman call my landline (I was about 15) accusing me of sleeping with her husband! I tried to explain that I had no idea what she was talking about and that I was a virgin and had no boyfriends or anything, all of which was true, and she point blank refused to believe I wasn't this mysterious other woman! In the end, after a good 5 minutes, she gave up, still believing I was his lover and saying it was the number he gave her so it must be me!
She then rang back about a minute later and in a creepy voice just said "I'm behind you"
I also once called back a number from my mobile/cell directly that I'd missed by about a second and the person on the other end said they couldn't have called me because they had no money on there phone, that one confused me a fair bit...
EDIT: We also got a lot of calls to our landline from what we think was a fax. It would be silent and then occasionally make a beeping noise. This happened a lot for a few years but slowly stopped. It left us VM's and everything!
About 8 years ago I used to get 3 am calls from the same drunk guy wanting "Lissa" to come hang out. Everyday I would walk up grumpy and tell him he had the wrong number. The next night same thing. Finally I went off on him. I was 7 months pregnant with twins and a 2 year old at home and I had to work at 6:00am. I told him to stop calling or I would turn his number into the police for harassment. I have no idea what the police would do with that complaint but it got the calls to stop.
A few months ago I was leaving work and saw I had a voicemail (my office gets no reception so its not unusual to have a voicemail without my phone ringing). I hit my voicemail button and it gave me a weird message from some lady about her mom being in the hospital and then I hear "Hello? OMG what is going on with mom" Like someone had answered in the middle of the message. Then the message stops. So I try to hit the "rewind" buttom to listen to the message again and my voicemail set up says "Your command could not be completed" So I hung up my phone and got back into the voicemail but the message was completely gone. I think somehow my phone must have crossed with someone elses cell. It was crazy.
I have had wayy too many weird phone convos, which is a major contributing factor to my phone anxiety.
When I was about fifteen or sixteen, I got a phone call around 2 AM. I didn't even look at the number, I just answered the phone. The guy said, "Hey!" I thought it was, at first, my LD bf so I said, "Hey, what's up?" Then, the guy said something about Jessica and I looked at my phone to see a strange number. I realized it was not my bf and told the guy, "I'm sorry, I thought you were someone I knew. You have the wrong number, I'm not Jessica." So, he kept trying to engage me in conversation. He asked me my name and all kinds of stuff about myself. I was talking to him because... well, I was sixteen and stupid.
Eventually, the guy asked me what I did for a living (I'd already told him I was a teen). I told him I babysat. He said, "Oh, do you babysit little girls?" I said, yes. He said, "Do you like to teach the girls?" I said, "Teach them?" He said, "You know, teach them. My ex-girlfriend was a cheerleading coach for little girls and she used to teach them all kinds of dirty stuff and sometimes I helped." I hung up on him, then. I hung up in disgust, so I never even got the guy's full name or anything. I should have, and called the cops. That still bothers me, today.
when i switched cell phone carriers awhile back, i was required to get a new cell number. well, apparently it was one that was previously used and disconnected because i used to get all sorts of strange phone calls for a guy named Tony. in particular, this one chick would drunk dial him every so often, always between the hours of 3-7am, asking to get back together, etc. i made the mistake one night of answering the phone and upon hearing a female voice on the phone, she completely flipped out. i hung up on her in the middle of her profanity laced tirade so she then proceeded to call back another nine times. the following morning, i called her and left a straightforward message that she was never to call my phone again or i would get the cops involved for harrassment. i also added that Tony probably changed his phone number so he could avoid having to deal with a psycho like her. i never heard from her again.
This happened to me about ten years ago when I was a freshman in college (ugghh I'm getting old). My cellphone rang around midnight waking me up. Thinking it may be a family/friend emergency, I answered. After my "hello," this woman starts yelling demanding to speak to her son. Bc I was so groggy from just waking up, I wasn't quite understanding what she was saying. Then it hit me, "you floozy put my son on the phone. Do you not have any decency to be sleeping over at some guy's house?" Even after I told her she had the wrong number, she was saying things like, "I know my son's number. You can't fool me with that line." It took another couple of minutes before she realized I was telling the truth. Then she was so apologetic afterwards. She told me her son is the first person in the family attending college via a basketball scholarship. They didn't want anything or apparently anyone interfering with his studies. lol. My roommates thought I should have just hung up rather than convince the lady she had the wrong number, but it was hilarious at the time (still cracks me up)! I mean, how many times do you get called a floozy in your life?
My name is somewhat Asian and in the telephone listing it's just first initial last name. There are around 50 identical to my listing in my county. I'm always getting voicemails from Asian people speaking in a native Asian language even though on my VM message I clearly state my name and it's obvious that I have a southern accent.
This thread is kinda creeping me out a little!
The weirdest one I remember was from this woman who had kept calling me. I don't answer calls from blocked numbers but the person wouldn't leave a message. Finally I picked up and she kept asking me if I knew some guy (I forget what his name was) and I told her I didnt know who she was talking about. She said that she was the guys girlfriend and wanted to know why my number was in his phone record and why I was talking to him on x date for x amount of time. It took me FOREVER to convince her I wasn't the other woman she thought i was and that the lines must have been crossed. Eventually she realized that she did make a mistake and flipped flopped the last two digits of the phone number. She apologized over and over and after talking for a few minutes more we hung up. I felt bad for her...although I did wish her well I was curious to see how that all panned out.
I once got a text asking me where someone was, I responded back that I didnt know who that was and then asked who the person that was texting me was. All they wrote back was "your worst enemy." That was a little weird.
And for almost a year, I would get texts and calls asking for a Chris.
I once got a voicemail where all I could hear was deep breathing, growly and clicking sounds. It was from a private number.
Another weird thing that happened a few years ago. I was texting my ex boyfriend who was at his friends house and he ran out of minutes. I just sent him the texts for when he had minutes again and could read them. It somehow ended up sending them to his friends phone, who's number I didnt even have. I still have no idea how that happened.
I used to get weird voicemails 3/4 in russian and 1/4 in English with the English words being really odd, like "hospital" came up a lot. Somehow they NEVER called when I was awake/available so I never got to tell them they had the wrong number.
I still have a CT phone number even though I've lived in PA for 6 years. When the school year started, I began getting calls from different CT schools. Either the nurse saying my kid was sick or that the school had early dismissal. Sometimes it is a live person and some times it's a recording but it is never from the same school or about the same child. So weird.
The other day I got a text from a random number saying hi. This is not unusual since I change phones every twi years and never transfer my contacts. I asked who it was and they gave me their yahoo messenger name and told me to add them. No idea who they were or how they got my number or why they thought I had a yahoo acct.
i once had a guy text me thinking he was answering a male/male sex advertisement from CityPages. it was... interesting.
@CountryRose: oh my...how very disturbing and upsetting!
