A crappy little ceramic thing of swans. I hate birds, and most people who know me know this!
I thought it was pretty funny that we got quite a few gift cards to chick-fil-a for engagement presents. We do love chick-fil-a!
@artbee: Oh man! I love Chick-fil-a too! That's an awesome gift!
And *most* of our non-solicited gifts were pretty cool.... housewares that we hadn't registered for but can absolutely use, some pretty picture frames....
But the Silly Putty takes the cake!
I got an opalescent egg with some weird wedding day poem and flowers painted on it. It was hideous. We paid it forward to another friend who was getting married and asked them to pass along the new tradition of the wedding egg at the next wedding they go to ;)
@bakerella: I LOL'd at the wedding egg. That is too awesome!
My brother got a jar of pickled pig's feet from his best friend. Nice.
@brenna1035: mmmm... tasty?
(actually, anything that has the words "pickled" plus an animal part makes me want to barf)
And apparently DH's best man ALSO got 5 lbs of Silly Putty as a wedding gift... their mutual friend from college seems to think it's the *perfect* gift for a newlywed couple...
To be fair, though, he did also give us a check for $75.... lol.
Interesting gifts, girls.
The "strangest" gift that we received was a step-stool and a yard stick holder from my MOH's parents. We didn't register for these items, but I'm sure we'll use them.
I didn't recieve this personally, but one of my friends received a set of matching hand-knit underwear from a lady at her church!
We got 69 one dollar bills in a card....super classy
We also got some amazingly ugly frames. One was made of frosted glass and had hawaiian flowers on it. It didn't really make much sense.
Last year a friend of mine was given 18 cans of Rock Star Energy Drinks from one of her cousins. She can't stand the stuff!!!
This isn't really strange, but DH's parents' neighbors (whom we've never once met and weren't invited to the wedding) gave us a crystal serving tray that is NOTHING like our taste. It was a sweet gesture, but it really did look like something that belonged in my grandparents' house.
We received a crystal cornucopia... It looks like it cost the person quite a bit, but wth am I ever going to do with that??
@tinylittlebird: I can't even imagine 5lbs of Silly Putty. That's a lot of comic transfers!
Mine requires a bit of backstory. I do a fair amount of musicals with my local Gilbert and Sullivan society, and their society posters used to feature a doodle of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons performing the HMS Pinafore.
So five or six years back when I was on the club's exec, I made a cardboard cutout of Sideshow Bob in sailor garb as a promotional material. Every year he gets pulled out of storage, repaired as necessary, and everyone and their dog takes pictures with him for funsies.
Flash forward to February 2011, two weeks after I performed as Buttercup in Pinafore and a few days after our wedding, as I open a gift from two of my dear friends from the society to find a photo frame...containing a picture not of my new husband and I, but of me in my Buttercup costume linking arms with Sideshow Bob.
DH couldn't understand why I was laughing so hard until I handed him the frame.
@bakerella: We have the white bowl in our family! It started when my aunt and uncle got this hideous white bowl for their wedding, they passed it on my Mom, other aunt, cousin, sister . . . now it will be my turn. I'm just hoping I have a cousin that gets married soon after, it's not exactly easy to store.
@mwitter80: $69 in singles? Wow, suggestive and practical. I like it ;)
From my husband's Aunt we (I) got a pair of thermal footy pajamas(we were living in Colorado at the time and she thought I could use them), and a set of silver drink coasters a friend received after opening a new account at the Bank! (we got the same ones already)
Oh my goodness, you ladies are making me wonder what I will get next year lol...
This is cheating a little, but also, FH's dad gave him red duct tape for his birthday. Along with other odds and ends his parents gave him, like socks and cookies. Really? Duct tape?
@mightywombat: HaHa...duct tape, socks and cookies?? Is there a reason or a family joke about those things? It almost sounds like they walked around the house looking for things to give at the last minute! lol
We were quite lucky with our guests - they either picked straight off our registry or they sent gift cards/cash.
The ONE dodgy present we got was a hand-me-down gift that they didn't even TRY to pretend wasn't hand-me-down. It was a set of tupperware steaming dishes in maroon (so all the food you cook in them will look like it's bleeding) and it was in a box that was completely crushed and had the tape removed and re-stuck down... badly.
What made it worse? The lady that gifted it to us runs tupperware parties all the time - so it was probably a freebie for her for hosting.
Hey, one dodgy present out of fifty aint bad! :)
We got a lot of things we didn't register for, but most of them were great.
We did get one giant pewter cross. I am talking like 2 feet tall. It is so heavy and...unique. Definitely not our style.
We haven't finished opening all ours yet, but DH's aunt/uncle gave us a random, ~15 year old random computer part wrapped in christmas paper and TONS of packing tape. Obviously a gag gift as they also gave us a very nice check, but we were like WTH as we were opening it!
Haha, the tradition in hubs family is a handmade wearable pot holder with a bride on it. Its awful looking, and I gave my SIL a questionable look at my bridal shower, but she explained it to me and now its my turn to pass it on!
Oh, and from a cousin we got a drain snake
This gift is somewhat strange, but I love it on its kitschy level. It's a little aluminum crab dish... as in shaped like a crab. As a Marylander it appeals to me, but I'm not exactly sure how to use it. But it is adorable, even though I wouldn't have picked it out for myself ordinarily.
We got this hideous amber colored jar/urn thingy. It looks like something a Drs office would fill with candy. We left it by the trash when we checked out of our hotel room. I hope the maid enjoyed it!
We got a candle and candle holder. And a couple ugly picture frames.
Yeah, for the most part, we got registry gifts, checks, cash, or gift cards.... but we also got some decent non-registered items, like some nice kitchen stuff from Target that we hadn't registered for but will be super useful, extra kitchen towels, etc.
Maybe not the things I would have picked if I were purchasing myself, but still very nice and very useful.
But then you get those.... interesting gifts. Oh well.
Interesting! Im intrigued as to what we will get now!
We did get a golden cow statue for our engagement party which was quite strange when we opened it but sits on our dining table as the centrepiece when we are having beef now!
We got a bride and groom cake topper. Not that unusual, but it was given to us at our gift opening the day AFTER our wedding.
a butter curling thingy, you scrape it along the butter and it creates a pretty blob of butter just like in hotels - i didnt know what it was until someone told me and ive only used it once
@Miss Sydney: I love that you use it when you are eating beef LOL awesome! :)

DH and I just opened up our presents, and we got a few hilarious ones!
We got a vase that has tropical birds and flowers painted on it (DH isn't a fan, but I actually think it's kind of pretty) and 5 lbs of Silly Putty.
Yes.... one of DH's friends gave us 5 lbs of Silly Putty!
