So, there's this family friend who is notorious for giving hideous, over-the-top gifts.  While I am always grateful that she is thoughtful enough to give me gifts for special occasions, she really outdid herself for my wedding.

The gift?  A WALL-SIZED PAINTING.   Seriously, it is the size of a LARGE WALL.  I believe she had to use her husband's pickup truck to transport it to the reception, since it is too big to fit in a regular car.  It was wrapped up and taking up a whole corner at the reception site, and it didn't occur to anyone that this was actually a gift because it was so huge.  We all figured it was some sort of furniture that the venue hadn't been able to move, or maybe a new window that they were going to install, or something...

Everyone knows that my now-husband and I live in another state (13 hrs away) and that we have a VERY SMALL APARTMENT.  We barely have room for our new pots and pans and dishes.

At the end of the reception, my parents asked her to take the gift back to her house because they couldn't transport it in their car, and they didn't have room for it at their house.  The idea was that I would pick it up next time I was down (which will be Thanksgiving.)  I haven't seen the painting itself because of the wrapping, but I have a feeling (based on her past gifts) that it will be something hideous.

My question is, why would anyone give such a gift?  How am I supposed to transport it?  H & I have small cars.  Am I supposed to rent a uhaul to bring up this ridiculous gift?  Uhauls aren't cheap! And where am I supposed to keep the present once we get it?  We don't have any room!!

I am not trying to be ungrateful, I do appreciate it and it was probably very expensive but ughhhh.... why????

Anyone care to share strange gift horror stories?

That is so horrible!  That is why I don't buy art for people because you don't know if their house is large or small or what the decor is like.  And so insensitive to not realize that you didn't live near the reception site and would have to transfer it yourself.

Oh my! While I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, I'm definitely laughing a bit now :)

We were lucky and didn't get any super crazy gifts. The strangest one we got was from some old family friend's on my mom's. These people are incredibly warm and kind, so I mean no offense to them. But their wedding gift to us was this very old-country inspired plaque with a religious phrase on it. I honestly don't even rermember what it said, something about Jesus. It had little hanging measuring spoons on it, and so I guess it's meant to be displayed in the kitchen. But yikes! We're not religious at all, and I'm almost certain they know that. It was appreciated, as always, but totally not our style. It's sitting in a box for good will, I hate to say. But we'll never use it, and hopefully someone shopping at the salvation army will connect with it.

Think it was a re-gift? Ugh. It's funny, but at the same time, it's annoying. Nothing like giving a gift that not only turns into an errand, but a chore.

I'd start the thank you note now.

Detail how you excitedly borrowed a pick-up to bring the lovely gift home and on the highway, it caught a gust of wind, sailed through the air, landed on an off-ramp and was sadly run over by a truck full of turkeys that were recently pardoned by the governor... BUT THANKS FOR COMING TO THE WEDDING AND THINKING OF US!

This reminds me of that episode of King of Queens where they get that horrific painting of the two of them as a gift, so they stage a robbery where the only thing that gets stolen is the painting.

Then, feeling bad about the robbery, the people REPLACE THE PAINTING. LoL

Bath and Body Works gift set. It's not that I don't use it, it's that it's a weird wedding gift

It's definitely a strange gift... I can't believe someone would bring something like that to a reception, though. That's sort of crazy.

@MissACS: that note TOTALLY cracked me up. :)

We didn't get any weird gifts, or horrible ones. Kind of sad in a way!! We have nothing to really laugh about! We got some non-registry items but they were all nice and in good taste (like an immersion blender, a coffee grinder, etc).

I honestly don't know what I would do with a ginormous painting... can you sell it??

It seems like she was show-boating a bit bringing it to the reception. As if she thinks the bigger hte package, of course, the better the gift. Even if it's the most beautiful painting ever, it's kind of rude to put it on you to figure out how to get it to your house.

Hahahaha!  One of my bridal shower gifts consisted of a set of handtowels, a hand-juicer the giver's daughter made in her college ceramics class, a jar of peanut butter, and expired canned food (canned chicken, tomatoes, and olives).  She said she was "setting up our pantry," but I think she was really just cleaning out hers.  Some people just give wierd, unexplainable gifts.

If the picture won't fit in your apartment, and is really not your style, I would just get rid of it.  She'll probably never know, and you and your husband will have a funny story to tell your kids someday.  :)

Yeah... I guess I have no idea how I'm even going to transport it anywhere.  It doesn't fit in my or any of my family's cars or houses.  So just to get it from her house to, well, anywhere is going to be quite an ordeal...  Even though this lady is one of my mom's best friends, my parents aren't touching that painting with a 10 ft pole, they're like "it's your gift, you worry about it!" I don't blame them but I don't want to have to deal with a huge a$$ painting either!!

    sigh...

Oh, and a while back I read on another website (I think it was indiebride) about an atheist couple who got a gift from a religious family member which was a book called something like "When Sinners Say I Do".. Yikes!!!  I'd still rather have that than the painting though, haha :-)

OMG! "When Sinners Say I Do"??? WTF???? That is the rudest "gift" ever! Yeah. At least with that one, you're able to physically carry it to the recycle bin!

Hopefully, the picture is a collage of pictures of you and your new hubby. The best way to get it to your place, if you choose not to drop it off at a goodwill is to take it to the UPS store and have them pack it in one of their picture frame packing boxes.

we got a strange yet cool gift - a bunch of silver dollar coins from the 1890's.  Really unexpected but fun to look at!  I like different things like that.

A huge painting on the other hand would be frustrating.  Maybe you can just store it at your parent's house for now?

I saw that indiebride thread, I seem to recall that the book was actually something along the lines of "everybody sins" and how to deal with marriage problems with the gospel, not that the gifter was saying that couple specifically were sinners...

    Here it is on amazon.

It's still kind of a weird gift to give to an atheist couple but uh at least it's less offensive then it originally sounds?

I would probably look for a local school, nursing home or community center that might have the space for (and desire to) display the painting and donate it. If it's going to cost you a U-Haul rental to transport it, and it's not going to fit in your apartment once you get it there, what's the point? You can't easily store something like that either. Thanks but no thanks.

We didn't get anything strange, but we got a whole lotta ugly. Our wedding was in South Africa, and while our American guests very dutifully chose gifts from our US registry (thank you!), our South African guests ignored our SA registry for the most part decided to wing it. Some of our guests clearly need to be invited to our house more often because they had no idea what our taste is - LOL!

That is super-funny about the huge painting but I really like Million's idea of donating it to a nursing home or hospital or someplace that has the space for it and where it would be appreciated (unless the picture is like, of nakey people or something...)

This isn't super-wierd but for our engagement party, we received a 100 Euro bill...Granted, the guy was from Poland or something but still...PITA! Now I have to go figure out where and how to change it into american dollars!
