I just posted about my photographer, finally took the plunge and picked one! It can be nerve wracking.  I wouldn’t try to worry too much about the mix of photos if you find one you really like, they can probably adjust a little to your liking.  Best of luck!

These are my thoughts…I would start making appointments to meet photographers to see you really like them once you meet them and see more of their work. Since you have a higher end budget you will probably just about have you pick of anyone.

With your budget, why don’t you look at the top ten wedding photographers in the world? 2011’s are:

Marcus Bell
Yervant
Nate & Jaclyn Kaiser – Image Is Found
Rocco Ancora
Parker J Pfister
Jonas Peterson
Camille & Chadwick Bensler – Jonetsu Studios
Dina Douglass
Greg Gibson
Jesse & Whitney Chamberlin – Our Labor of Love

If you truly want the best, I absolutely love

I feel the same way you do. I have been looking at beautiful wedding photography in passing for years and at this point I know what I like and what I don’t like very quickly.

But there is always one image that can change your mind for or against a photographer, it seems.

I think what you need to do is pick your top 3 and cut it off there. Then meet with all 3 and see what they offer and how you feel after meeting them. More than great pictures, a good photographer should click with his subject in some way. At least, that’s what I imagine it should be.

Let us know what you decide!

@kwynn: And holy wow, his work is phenomenal. Didn’t notice until you mentioned his name, but I went to his blog and realized he was recently featured in Wedding Style by Grace Ormonde in a feature on a Roman couple that left me speechless.

Wow. If there was a way to spend $7,000+ and not feel guilty…

I’m a photographer and actually met him…he is unbelievably nice and amazing. An inspiration to many!

The best advice I’ve seen, which was unfortunately after my wedding:

When reviewing the photographer’s work, ask to see the whole wedding not just the album.  Anyone can get one or two great shots but would you have enough for your album?

If I had seen this advice and done this, I never would have hired my photographer. Over 800 pictures but I’ll barely be able to pick enough for album.

@kittybean: What style/approach do you prefer? Do you like classic photos, more modern, heavy on portraits, photojournalistic . . . that might help you narrow things down a bit. You’ve got the budget to find someone great, so if we can help you narrow it down or make suggestions based on what style you like most I’m sure everyone would like to help!

@Georgia Bee: So true. =( sorry you had to deal with that! Lots of photos doesn’t always mean lots of great ones.
