It didn't work for me. I had them stripped at 38 and 39 weeks, I went into labor at exactly 40 weeks. But it was my due date, and I think it's just b/c she was ready to come and had nothing to do with my membranes being stripped. My doctor said if it was going to work, it would have within 24 hours.
I don't think it works very well... I can't believe it's almost time for your baby to arrive!
@artbee: I agree.
Sweeping the membranes is only going to bring on labor if your body is ready for labor anyway. In most cases, it just causes lots of cramping and spotting. If this is your first, there's a good chance you still have another week of waiting.
I was 1cm dilated and 50% effaced at my 37 week appointment, 2cm and 50% at my 39 week appt, 3 cm and 80% at my 40 week appointment (40 wks and 1 day) when I had my membranes stripped. The midwife told me it usually will help within 48-72 hours if your body is ready and I went into labor 2.5 days later. I think it did make a difference for me, but only because my body was ready anyways...the midwife told me she could have broken my bag of waters at that appointment if I had wanted her to.
@sand dollar: I think it depends on if anything is going on before they strip your membranes if it's going to work or not. I had mine stripped at 39 weeks and at 40 weeks. Nothing happened. I ended up getting induced at 41 weeks and 1 day so for me they didn't work.
is this an american thing because ive not heard any of my friends who have children had this done to them and ive been a birthing partner and not heard of this - personally (being uneducated on the subject btw) there is no way i would let them do this to me, it sounds intrusive
@eloping: It's really not very intrusive. The basic concept is to disconnect the bag of waters from the cervix which also produces prostiglandins and can induce labor contractions. It can also soften the cervix a little and encourage effacement.
Looks like it didn't really do much for me. I'm so tired of being pregnant. I just want to get this show on the road already!
Mine were stripped at my 38 week appointment when I was 2cm dilated and 50% effaced, and nothing happened other than cramping, spotting, and losing my mucus plug (gross).
Last Tuesday at my 39 week appointment I hadn't progressed at all and refused to have it done - my husband and I feel the baby will come when he's ready. Our due date was yesterday (August 14).
It worked for me. I went in to see the midwife on my due date and nothing was really looking ready to go. My midwife stripped my membranes and I started having light contractions that afternoon and was in full-out labor the next night. I think it really worked for me but my midwife did say that it doesn't always work.
I was already in labor when the midwive stripped mine. Had starting losing mucus plug and loose stools the night before. VERY VERY minor contactions started at around 5am. I already had a 9am appt that day and she stripped them then. Contractions steadily increased throughout the day and didn't really make me clinch up until about 4pm when I was 4cm. Warren was born at 8:33. So did it help speed things up... who knows. Also I was 40w5d - so I'm sure he was on his way anyways :)
Ugh, I'm so sick of being pregnant too! I was hoping I was going to read this and find that the odds were in favor of it working but it looks like it's just hit or miss. I'm only 2 days past my due date but I can't take it. My doctor said they'd wait, assuming everything was alright, 2 weeks. I won't be able to hold out. I'm so uncomfortable and more importantly- I wanna see her!
I had mine stripped while I was in labor. My cervix was doing nothing and I was 41 weeks. It freaking hurt.
Oh by the way, girls who want to get the show on the road- I was a week late and ready to punch someone. DH and I "did it", and my water broke a few hours later. It wasn't pretty-but it worked!
I had mine done at 37 and 38 weeks; I would have had it done at 39 weeks, too, but I went into labor the morning of my 39 week appointment. When I was deciding if I wanted to get mine done or not, I found some research that it is effective in inducing labor, but the effectiveness was obviously less than medication inductions like pitocin, Cervadil, etc... Definitely ask your doctor about the effectiveness and any research you can read on stripping membranes, if it will help in your decision. Also, it didn't really hurt for me; a little uncomfortable, but not much more than a regular old cervical check.
Lastly, I'm sorry you're at the "I'm over it" stage of pregnancy. It's definitely the hardest part! My boss says that in order to go into labor, women have to get so frustrated that the baby thinks it's a better idea to be on the outside than stay on the inside. Lol, but so true!
@flamingred: Ditto on the sex thing...totally worked for us. Might have been a combination of the stripping of the membranes, lots of side lunges in yoga (which according to the duola helped break one of her clients water) and sex for me.
So far nothing has really happened, just the usual painful cramping and BH that I've been dealing with for the past 3 weeks. I've been walking up a storm, and am doing everything short of cartwheels to get things moving. I've lost my mucus plug about 3 times already, so I hardly think of it as a sign labor is imminent (I lost it during some prelabor last month, but it regrew like the doc said it would, then again after a vag exam, and a lot more after the "stripping"). I just texted my husband that he is required to come home and have aggressive "personal time" with me so maybe we can encourage this whole labor thing to start! I go to the doc tomorrow, so fingers crossed I'll at least be more progressed than the 1cm and 50% effaced I was last time. Maybe I'll be the rare case of a delivery on my due date!
Went back to the doc today, still no progression. Been having super painful BH and cramping for the past week and a half, and they're not even doing anything! Argh! She stripped them again, but this time it hurt like a mofo. Hoping this kick starts labor, but if it doesn't I'm being put in the hospital books for an induction on Monday. Fingers crossed!
Fingers crossed for you, sand dollar! I hope you go into labor today!

I know pregnancy and labor is by no means an exact science, but I was wondering if any of you could share your stories. I had my membranes stripped on Friday, and am still waiting on labor to kick in. I'm 39w 5d. So for you ladies who had their membranes stripped, did it work for you? How long did it take for labor to kick in afterwards? I'm so ready to be done with this whole pregnancy thing and have our little girl here, it's driving me crazy!
