So long as your head is the correct size and the background is the correct color, you can use the photo. I'm not sure the color correcting is a good idea. We had our last batch done at Costco. She didn't like the way the first ones looked and re-did it. Why not just bring a mirror with you?
I always DIY because I can't stand to spend 10 bucks on two tiny pictures that look bad anyway!
I've never heard of anything like that in the States. I had mine taken at Kinkos. I look horrible in the photo but it's not like I've ever had to submit to a cavity search or extra questioning at the border because of the ugliness, lol. They can show you the picture afterwards to see if you want to use it. Sometimes ID photos just won't look good!
OK, I guess I am SOL then :( Thanks for the replies. I remembered a photo place in the mall where DH and SIL took pics years ago as a gift for their mom, but of course it's closed. That's the kind of place I'm looking for. If I can't find one in a couple weeks, I guess back to CVS with a mirror!
@meliss: Actually I know a place in Orange County that does it. I'm not sure if you're willing to drive to Orange County for a photo. It's a Vietnamese studio that does passport photo. The place I went to (I used to live in O.C) does the photo less than an hour or so. I'm not sure if the guy does touch up or not, but my skin look fine in the photos. You can also find asian photo studio in your area and call to see if they do it.
it's a passport photo. it's going to look pretty crappy no matter what once they print it on blue paper with that foil thing over it. don't worry about it.
I just got mine done at Walgreens. It wasn't that big of a deal. I think it was about $7.99 for the two of them.
i know what you mean - i had to get some done for some paperwork in china and they looked great! they photoshopped out some wayward curls and made them look great! here, i only get passport photos done right after i get a haircut & color, they turn out great with the salon hair lol. i also make them let me preview it to see if i want a retake. i took some for my brother before, it was a major headache trying to get it the perfect size but it's doable and definitely an option if you want to do it at home. i use my passport a lot too, why wouldn't you want a nice photo of you in it? it's really a keepsake. I have my first passport (with the holes punched in it) and it's cute to have, this passport will be the same. :]
I have to agree, no matter what it looks like to start, once it's printed in the passport it's not going to look great. I had awesome pictures taken and I couldn't believe how terrible I look in the actual passport.
@jimbert321: not gonna lie, mine looks pretty freaking fantastic! :P i think it's worth it to get a nice picture.
You can try to look for one of those photo studios in the large dept stores. Like in a Sears or JCPenny. Typically I don’t think color-correction is allowed, but when my FI and I took our photos there, they showed it to us before printing and the lighting was better in general.
I got mine done at the post office and they came out nice (but I did bring a mirror).
Not all post offices have the photo booths--just the ones that do 1st time passport photos.
@elliestan: Yesss, you know what I'm talking about :D Thanks for the support. When you have a nice photo like that you can circulate it for years; use it in all formal applications, give DH to carry in wallet etc. I used a photo taken when I was 19 for every imaginable occasion for ten years and it helped that I still looked exactly the same.
@cutexkitty: Haha, I don't know which one's stronger, my vanity or my laziness. I might do it if I'm there for some other business. Do you remember the name?
@jimbert321: Good point, but sometimes that works in reverse. I just changed my name on the driver's license and my new DMV pic actually looks pretty exotic and hot with the warped mark on it :)
@IAmLemondrop: I will look into this, thank you!
@meliss: If you're interested, pm me and I'll give you the studio name. It's best to call them to discuss your expectation before you drive all the way to O.C.
I just remember when I went there (twice) they have mirror, brush, and told me how to pose for the picture.

I need a new passport because of my married name change and thus a new photo. I'm embarrassed to admit, I've been living in the States 15 years and I still don't know how somethings work. I would like a somewhat decent headshot since it will stay in there for 10 years, and I travel quiet a bit. So far I had one attempt at CVS at a passport photo and one at one of those visa/passport service places. Both of them came out like deranged mugshots :( Back home, there are photo places every few blocks where you can sit in a nice room/studio, sort yourself out in front of a mirror before the photo is taken so you can be sure your hair is not standing up, your eyebrows are not pointing in 5 different directions etc. Instead of a 5 min polaroid shot, they touch up the photo nicely and give it to you in a couple days. Are there any places similar to this in the US? When I search photographers in LA, all I get is wedding photographers and fancy portrait studios for actors & models. What should I be looking for in the yellow pages or online?
