I have worked at a bridal store, and have made enough dresses to be dangerous, so I have been fortunate enough to try on things and sort of know what my base style is.  I’m like you, though, I have had all different styles, from goth to corporate to girly.  I had some ideas of features I liked, but in the end, my wedding theme/style and the weather helped me narrow down.  I ended up with a layered lace slightly off-the-shoulder dress in champagne and ivory.  My wedding theme/style is vintage, we’re having it in October in Wisconsin.  Our venue is a huge ballroom built in the 1920’s, so I really wanted to play up the vintage angle.  Amusingly, I looked online at all sorts of dresses, but I knew that fit & flare was really flattering on me, and I felt good in it, too.

Bottom line: go out and find a place like David’s bridal where you can go in relatively easily, try on one or two of the different styles (as well as their Vera Wang line), and you’ll probably find yourself leaning towards different shapes and fabrics.  🙂

Good luck!

ETA: I totally wanted an ombre dress as well!  In the end, I gave it up because I wasn’t going with a color that lended itself well to that, and it doesn’t really go with vintage.

@Kissed_by_lightning:  Oh, lots of ladies have no idea! I worked with a bride who was going to wear her sister’s gown, but wanted to try on a few just to see.  I put her in at least 25 gowns.  She didn’t like any of them.  Came back a few weeks later and bought one after working with another consultant on a whim, and it was one she told me she didn’t even like!  I had no issues with it, but it just goes to show, sometimes its all in your mood when you go in. 😉 Just go try a few on, with only one or two other people.  You don’t need all the opinions, just a small few.  🙂
