I would just do a nice dark brown or espresso . They will stand out more against your wall color, yet will adapt to any color scheme change that you make in the future.
I agree with @julies1949: espresso would be perfect and solid black needs constant dusting.
Cute headboard!
What about painting the furniture a dark gray, like the pillowcases, and stenciling on the drawer fronts? Maybe a damask pattern or Marimekko type flowers?
Or use wallpaper?

Maybe add a couple more colors to your scheme? A mustard/camel, maybe, to add warmth? (I know crimson is warm, but with the blacks/greys it can also feel violent.) And something else to soften it maybe? I messed around with the color scheme on Colorjack, and I like it with a purpley-gray. http://www.colorjack.com/?swatch=000000,8B9386,C90016,3E4245,DA7500,A68B9C
@julies1949: I like the idea of dark wood. My makeup vanity is a dark cherry color - maybe I will match that.
What about this color scheme? Not sure how I would add the aqua and gold colors...lamps? I found the ones below on Pottery Barn for $99 each - wish I could find them for cheaper!

Although I would go dark for the night tables, I wouldn't necessarily do them the exact same color as the makeup vanity. It's much more interesting when everything isn't all matchy matchy. It looks like you have acquired the pieces over time.
The annoying thing is that while our dollar is at par with or just above the US dollar, those $99 lamps are $131 at Pottery Barn in Canada.
I would just look around at your home decor discount stores- here in Canada they are Home Outfitters and HomeSense- for lamps that you like.
Hmmm....now you got me thinking red nightstands and espresso dresser?
What about something like this for the dresser? I like that the branches and birds are removable decals so if I get tired of it, I can peel it off!

Nice colors! And love the decal. Would you still paint the furniture?
Throw pillows could introduce some other colors, if you don't mind messing with your gray bed. Also artwork. (You could totally DIY it with paper cutouts that match your dressers.) Throw rugs. Add a chair or bench and paint it/upholster it in those colors. Right now I love hat boxes.

sarahshatboxes.com has a bunch of nice ones if you want ideas. Also, they are very easy to DIY.
@Elvis: Yes, I'd still have to paint/restain since the furniture is currently a blonde color.
I thought of you this am when I was watching one of my favorite home shows -Cityline.
www.cityline.ca Kimberly Seldon did a segment on her master bedroom at her country home that reminded me of your bedroom. Her bedroom was done in shades of gray with raspberry accents.
They haven't posted the segment yet but you may be able to view it online.

So I made a headboard to go with my grey bed theme, and now I am thinking that our old furniture needs to be painted. Our nightstands are a blonde, light pine color and I have a mismatched dresser that is also in a similar color. I have crimson red curtains on the windows. The wall color is not up for change.
What color should I paint the furniture? I want to go for a modern, clean feel.
I was thinking maybe doing a semi-gloss black for the frames of the nightstands and dresser, and then painting the drawers semi-gloss white.
