This isn’t exactly new-found information…..but I did find it interesting to see in person.
I am not super into jewelry, but have definitely learned A TON about diamonds since getting engaged. So while I don’t make it a point to inspect other people’s jewelry…..
I have a gf who is going through a divorce. It is in her posession, but earlier this week they were trying to figure out who was going to keep it. She didn’t know much about the ring, just that it was 1 carat or less, platinum metal and the store it was purchased from. She know’s there’s paperwork, but it’s in her husband’s posession– and let’s just say that while they still speak, he wasn’t going to hand over the paperwork.
We got together and we were supposed to go to a mall on Tuesday. Weather held us back, but she brought her ring with to her sister’s house (where she works and where we met for lunch)– so I took a look at it. The first thing I asked her was: “are you sure this is a carat?”–
I had only looked at the face and for a few seconds, but I knew right away it faced up much smaller than my diamond, which is 1/2 carat.
So in the meantime, she found out her diamond is .86 carats. But hands down- there is no question hers faces up quite noticeably smaller than mine. Of course, when you take a side-view, you can see that yes, the bottom of her diamond is indeed thicker than mine.
Mine is NOT a shallow cut diamond- in fact, it’s right on the cusp of being a deep cut, but it’s still a GIA XXX.
While I didn’t think to take a picture (she would not have minded)- I was amazed at how much smaller her diamond looked.
Since IMO, diamonds are about sparkles and beauty….it’s a “lesson” for those who think stats are everything. Sure, you might feel great that you have a .86 carat diamond—- but when it looks smaller than a half carat— it sorts of makes you wonder if it’s worth it!!
And while I don’t really have a solid point- I guess I just found this interesting more than anything. Yep., of course I know there are all sorts of cuts out there- was just shocked to see a diamond .26 carats heavier than mine and look so tiny!!
