Starting on Friday I have had sudden severe pain in my lower back.  It feels like a sharp stab in my lower right back/butt and sometimes (getting more often) it's so bad I cannot walk.  I am going to try to get into my OB's office tomorrow, but has anyone else experienced this?  Any suggestions?  Some friends have suggested a chirpracter... has anyone tried this?  I'm starting to really get scared about this -- I'm not sure I can keep working with this level of pain.

I had this happen a lot! Full disclosure: I was in a wreck when I was six months pregnant and broke my tailbone. However, it wasn't just my tailbone it was my lower back and it seemed to get worse the closer I got to the end. My contractions weren't the part that killed me it was the back labor. I found that taking a long very hot bath or heating pad helped me a lot, the only day it didn't was the day she was born. I hope this helps and maybe your OB can recommend some other things that will help. Good luck, you aren't the only one!

Not sure if it's the same thing but I had a lot of discomfort with sciatic nerve pain during the end of my pregnancy. I would get a sharp pain in my lower back that radiated down into my butt cheek and almost down to my knee. It was awful and would come out of nowhere. This is pretty common in pregnancy and I went for massage therapy twice a week (someone who specializes in pregnancy massage) and it helped a bit. It would still flare up from time to time but not nearly as much. Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon!

Yeah.  I am only 19 weeks pregnant so I did not expect back pain like this so soon!  And I didn't expect it to be so severe and stabbing.  Thanks for the well wishes.  I am going to try to get this sorted out ASAP ... it is really bad.

It sounds like sciatica, which I suffer from as well. Mine is severe and one thing that helps me during pregnancy is swimming. If you can spend an hour in a pool you will feel sooo much better!

@chicagowife: Can you call your doctor now and leave a message with the answering service? Your doctor should get back to you and give you advice/suggest if you need to be seen within a few hours at the most this evening.

I had sudden pain all last weekend running along my sides towards my pelvic area. I called the OB/GYN and left a message with their answering service because I was really concerned. I couldn't walk well, breathe and was in a lot of pain. I'm only 17 weeks so I got scared. The Dr. called me back shortly after and said that it was just "growing pains" as my uterus and stomach stretches and that it should go away within the next 3-4 week. I felt so much better after calling and the pain has since gone. Don't be afraid to call...that's what they are here for. Feel better!

@chicagowife: If its what I'm thinking, and it sounds like it is, I get this all the time. Especially at work or doing anything decently active where I have to bend up and down a lot. My boyfriend's dad is a chiropractor and he said that my hip was out of proper rotation and alignment. Before we started dating I would have NEVER considered going to the chiropractor, but now I go consistently and it truly helps.  I hope you can find something to help!

Is there a nurse's hotline you could call to at least get some ideas?

Thanks all.  I guess I am going to try the answering service right now.  I think it is better not to take chances.  And I think I may try a chiropractor -- several people have said it worked wonders.  Thanks so much -- I love wedding bee.

good luck!  It also sounds like sciatica to me.  I didn't have it during pregnancy but did once from a soccer injury.  I was a mess, but I was way better after a chiro. adjustment & a deep tissue massage.  This was before my pregnancy, though, so I would definitely check with your doctor.  Luckily, my chiro is able to do adjustments during pregnancy, and I splurged on a package of 6 prenatal massages.  I really think this helps a lot, and my therapist claims it helps prevent swelling.  I had no obvious/visible sweeling even in week 39.  (there was some...just not visible to the naked eye)

Thanks all.  I called the nurse's line last night and she wasn't very helpful.  But I also tried to doing some yoga stretches (only doing ones that did not hurt) and I think that may have helped loosen my muscles a bit.  This morning I am still in some pain, so I am definitely going to try to get into my OB's office AND make an appointment at a chiropractor.  I've never been to a chiropractor, but this definitely seems like the time to try it!  Will update everyone when I get any reports from the doctor and/or chiropractor -- I'm hoping if other bees have this problem they will be able to use my experience to learn from!

So my doctor says it's 99% sure that it's sciattic pain caused by tiny changes to my posture.  He says that the only sure cure is rest.  (Which is so frustrating!)  I asked about the chiropracter, and he says it helps some people but for others it doesn't seem to help.  I actually made a chiropractor appointment for 5:30 tonight, so hopefully that helps.  Just wanted ot update everyone.

I am 16 weeks and I haven't had quite what you are describing but I have had sudden shooting pain right by my tail bone and my doc said it's okay/normal as long as it keeps going away right away/quickly.

good luck! i know it hurts :(

The pain you're describing sounds a lot like the pain my cousin experienced during her pregnancy, when her baby started resting on her sciatic nerve. I've never been pregnant so I can't speak from firsthand experience, but I did communicate a lot with her during this time. She was barely able to walk - she couldn't bend one of her legs at all! She was able to find some relief with the following treatments:

    - Acupuncture

    - Myofascial Release (some therapists practice this form of pressure massage that loosens up the myofascial tissue, which becomes tense when parts of the body are in pain)

My cousin also used a cane to walk during the last 2 months of her pregnancy. She felt a bit silly, but she said it really helped her get around.

    I hope this helps!
