What kind of dance you should do depends on the song you've chosen. A foxtrot will probably work best because of the time signature, and it works at a variety of tempos. You could learn the basic, promenade, a few turns, and maybe a few other steps. If you look on YouTube you can find instructions.
@ MissBananaBread Thanks for the suggestion. We'll look into the Foxtrot.
Depending on your song, swing is actually not too complicated and super fun. You can learn the basic steps and a few turns and when you mix it up you look legit. Not as much as the people who can REALLY do it, but it isnt too hard. However it does require a certain type of music that may or may not fit your first dance idea. Oh and youtube has lots of ballroom dance videos to give you a BASIC idea what the different kinds look like.
How about some latin ballroom dancing? Merengue is one of the easiest dances to learn, and you can throw in some fun turns and dips!

The waltz is, hands down, the easiest to learn. There are so many videos on youtube that will teach you the basic steps. And once you get the "1-2-3" pattern down, it's easy to throw in some turns, spins, etc. You just have to make sure your first dance fits in with that.
Can you tell me what your first dance song is and I can certainly help you find an appropriate dance!
A simple two step is easy, fox trot is the same steps, a one step can be beautiful if done correctly, a salsa is easy and can be slowed down. You could also learn a simple waltz. Honestly, I think a one step is your best bet, it is easy as walking and you can through in some really cool moves into it.
If you need some good instruction videos, youtube has some very good ones.
OP: I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread, but thanks so much for posting on such an important topic! FI and I have zero skills, save for the 5th grade shuffle, and his dad wants to rip up the floor all afternoon long!
@ohmybears48: Our first dance is "I can't help falling in love with you" by Elvis. We also have no dance skills - could you possibly recommend the right kind of dance for this song? Thank you!
I would say that a waltz is a bit easier (the basic turning step is pretty easy), but a foxtrot maybe has more music.
To improve the "high school sway", I'd suggest holding your frame (where you put your arms on each other) properly. I taught my dad how to hold frame better and a simple turning step and people were impressed by our dance.
Foxtrot is really easy to pick up. DH and are swing dancers but our choreographers recommended putting some foxtrot in our dance to play with style and variations. Even the basic looks "impressive", but of course people expected more of us (which was a bit annoying but whatever) and the turns, cortes, etc are also easy to pick up.
@PinkMagnolia: I agree on working on your frame. Between getting my dad in closer to a proper frame and backleading a very basic east coast footwook, nondancers believed my dad could dance (actual dancers could see right through it though).

So against the desire of my entire future in-law family, FI and I will NOT be having a customized choreographed first dance. I would like however, to do something a little more structured than the usual "jr high sway". What are some easy (few step) ballroom dances that we could learn? I know the Waltz and Foxtrot are very popular, but not sure how those look exactly.
Also, I would like the same kind of dance for my father-daughter dance (not the same dance though).
Any suggestions or ideas??
