Hi Ms. Brew - now I don't mean to bash your current shoe but nike shocks have the highest incidence of achilles tendon tears and nike in general are built more for looks than for biomechanics!
The two best shoes currently on the market that actually have sound biomechanical research behind them are asics and saucony. The difference being asics uses gel support and saucony uses a grid support!
Personally I use asics and LOVE THEM! I have problems with shin splints, anterior compartment syndrome and plantar fascitis and my asics help keep all my problems under control.
It is also important to get dual foam support a soft foam at the ball and heel of the foot and a denser foam at the arch of the foot! This is usually indicated by a change in colour in the foam but if you can also feel the difference in the foam density when touching it!
How to tell if you need new shoes? Once horizontal creases form in your shoes (in the less dense foam at the heal and ball of the foot) this means that the is no longer rebounding and giving you adequate support.
How to make your shoes last longer? Only use your shoes every other day (especially if you are a runner) The foam requires 24 hours to rebound adequately so if you run everyday it is recommended to buy 2 pairs and where them every other day!
I am sorry if this is too much information it is just a topic I feel strongly about as a kinesiologist!
P.S. Once you go Asics you NEVER go back!
Great! Thanks for the info, i was really surprised about the achilles tendon tears. Hate to admit but they were mainly bought because i thought they were cute, and they were nike so "they must be good." Lol. I'll let you know the update if i buy some Asics.
Asics or New Balance are great!
I've had to deal with achilles tendon tears. Is not a good thing to put up with. Get the good shooooes! (Though I'm guilty for buying 'cute' workout shoes sometimes).
I second New Balance. Go to an actual New Balance store and they will fit you with exactly what you need :)
I love Saucony! They are a great running shoe! (and as a plus, they're cute! I bought mine for that reason before I knew how good they were)
They come in every color! My favorites are pale green!
I have always had good experiences with New Balance! Right now I am using NB 1225 running trainers, and I really like them.
My vote is for Asics, it's the only shoe I've ever run in... For arch support, I would try the GT2140. Brooks is also another great shoe company, their arch support shoe is the Adrenaline. For Saucony, you can try the Hurricane or the Omni...To be honest, I wouldn't go with New Balance, from what I've heard and read, the majority of the shoes are very soft and actually won't give you much support...Good luck!
I don't know much about the research behind shoes, but if you're not completely turned off of Nikes, I would recommend the Nike Structure Triax shoe. I had the 11 and recently bought the 12 when they discontinued the 11. Both have been amazing. It is a fantastic shoe for arch support and overpronation. And it has the Nike+ system, where you can get a chip that will sync with your iPod and track your time, pace, calories, etc. while you run. I'm a total dork and I love that.
I love Saucony as well! Wouldn't wear anything else.
Are you looking for one that has a lot of arch support? I have the Saucony Hurricane. It has an arch lock system and is a good stability shoe. I have VERY flat feet, over pronate and had my right foot fused so I needed something with really good support. They were a little pricey but well worth it. I can also easily fit my orthodic in without a problem.
If you go onto Saucony's website the have a shoe advisor which you can use to help determine the best style for your foot type and use.
I've done several marathons and love Asics. I'd guess that the majority of runners in my running group wear Asics.
Another vote for Asics (also a runner)! If you're looking for good running shoes, go to a specialty running store. They'll watch you walk and help you find shoes that provide the support, etc. you need.
Another vote for Asics! :) I've worn their cheer shoes since my sophomore year of high school, and I never work out in anything else. The soles are super thick and great at shock absorbing (since they're built for jumping). You probably won't need the hand grips on the bottom, but they still make great (and relatively inexpensive) workout shoes.
Has anyone had any experience with these?
Obviously I'm entranced by the random toes, but I do wonder what the benefits of simulating running barefoot would be. What about arch support and... all of those other advantages offered by supportive shoes?
Still, I'm intrigued...
I have been wearing Brooks sneakers for the past... 4 or 5 years? I LOVE them. I found New Balance sneakers to be a little too narrow for my feet and the Brooks just fit me personally better than Asics. Also a long time runner so I can vouch that these are good shoes.
My advice is to get professionaly fitted at a local running store. What works for me may destroy your feet. GL - finding the right shoes is SO worth it.
I swear by New Balance and Mr. Peng swears by Asics. I've done Nike and Reebok, and while they always have a slew of cute choices, I'll pick a pair of old reliable NB's anyday, even if they aren't always as cute!!!
SanDiegoAil's advice is best... I'd head to a specialty running store and get fitted, especially if you're experiencing pain!
I can't wear Nike because they are too small in the toe box. I have high arches, a narrow heal and I'm a pronater. I swear by Mizunos. I've ben wearing htem for about 10 years and they are the most comfortable shoes ever. They feel like bedroom slippers to me. I've got my Mom and FI wearing them now. too.

I currently have a pair of nike shocks (? i guess, not sure of name.) Anyways, they have zero arch support and the back heel is higher then front and HARDER. I've had them for a long time, but they are really killing my shins on the treadmil and even walking the dog outside.
So bees, any suggestions on a good, decently priced pair of gym shoes?
Oh, and does anyone have those new Reebok EasyTone sneakers that claim to "28 percent more gluteus maximus muscle activation, and 11 percent more calf and hamstring activation than traditional sneakers." I dont know if thats a good marketing scam, but in SHAPE mag they def look worth buying !
Thanks Girls.
