I’m going dress shoping next week and I have narrowed down (I think!) what I want: simple flowy ivory dress, not too embellished (lace, beads, cristals), structured or heavy. I am looking for sheath or A-line silhouettes. I like tulle skirts, and I would prefer not to have a strapless gown. I have quite a large tattoo on my shoulder blade and I don’t want my dress to showcase it. I really like it but if I’d prefer to have something like a larger strap, cap sleeve or embellished back so it would not cover it but just won’t make it as visible. If this helps: the wedding will be taking place on an island, by the lake. It is a small affair with no bridal party, 100 guests.
So far my pinterest search as brought to my knowledge Jenny Packham, Sarah Seven, Soft by Rosa Clara, Jenny Yoo and Claire Pettibone, all of whom I can’t afford with my budget 🙁 (maybe Jenny Yoo!)
So, with 1000$ CAN who can you suggest me (or where should I go)? My appointments next week are at David’s Bridal and White Satin in Ottawa and then 2 more in Montreal (Nadia and Pronuptia).

When I was dress shopping, I really loved the Allure and Maggie Sottero collections. There were a lot of dresses that fit my tastes as well as my budget. Most dresses I tried on were in the $1000-1200 USD range, however the more elaborate dresses cost more. As for the designers you mentioned, this dress appears to be inspired by Claire Pettibone:
Maggie Sottero Savannah Marie
while this one has more of a Jenny Packham feel:
Maggie Sottero Gemma
The first dress is pretty embellished, and they are both from her new collection, so they might be out of your price range. I would keep an eye out for sample sales and preowned sites if that is the case.

I’m looking for something in a similar price range for a destination wedding and I’ve found several Nicole Miller dresses I like..

sophielle: Jcrew. That’s their specialty, their dresses often go on clearance/sale, and their bridal sizes are the same as their dress sizes, so no weird calculating.

I don’t know what your budget is, but if you could go up to about $2-3k these are possibilities:
Tara Keely – this one’s a bit structured – but it has a Claire Pettibone feel to me:

I will always suggest Maggie Soterro. I did not pick one of her styles for my dress, but did try on a couple sheath styles. If you go to the main Website, you can select “Sheath” under the silhouette.
It was very light, which I did like about it.

sophielle: this is my dress – it’s a maggie sottero and was $749. It’s kind of a cross between a sheath/a-line (very slight)

clairebbbear: Oh my god! Thanks for all those sugestions! I have to say, I think Maggie Sottero is a little too much “done” for my taste… I am looking more for a bohemian feel, something that flows and less structured. I really don’t like satin (particularly crisp white satin, it just doesn’t agree with my olive skintone) The Tara Keely one is gorgeous but my budget is only 1k 🙁
I like the Martina Liana ones too! I’d have to check if I can make a quick trip to the states to go at J Crew…
Kacie209: secretbee33: What make you chose Maggie Sottero?

Try a webside like preownedweddingdresses.com (used dresses) or bestbridalprices.com (a real brick and mortar store that also sells authentic dresses online) and search for a sheath silhouette. OP, I’ve seen some really nice used gowns being sold for ridiculous prices, even things like Claire Pettibone inching toward $1000. Even try Ebay. I have bought (and sold) several dresses on there with no problems, and there are some real steals.
Here’s some I found in 15 minutes:
A Jenny Packham for $760
Leanne Marshall (project runway I think?)
Romona Keveza to die for!
And this Enzoani! *swoon*
