FI and I live in a north facing apartment, and as a result it is VERY dark. The walls are all painted a dark bluish/grey color, which makes it even worse. It is a condo, and we rent from the owner, who told us we could NOT paint while we lived there. Boooo!

Sooooo - anyone have any suggestions for how to brighten up a place WITHOUT painting? Perhaps I should get some better lights or something. It just looks like midnight in here in the middle of the day, and is espeically dreary now that it is rainy all the time here in Vancouver.

definitely bring in a lot of lamps and uplighting, can you switch out the light fixtures?

Mirrors!  Mirrors really make a space seem bigger and brighter.  Like you said, I would also get some better lighting, I really like track lighting.

I would love to install track lighting, and could ask my landlord, but seeing as he wont' let me paint, he is probably less likely to let me install something in the ceiling. Perhaps more lamps place around the room, like crebre suggested? Blueshoes, I like your suggestions of mirrors, that I am sure I could do.

lamps, uplighting, and don't use your overhead lights.  Kind of take advantage of the coziness. But def. add some mirrors to bounce light and give the illusion of bigger size etc.

Not necessarily to help with the darkness, but maybe rearrange your furniture also. It's nice to see things in a fresh way.

True... I didn't think about the install part.  Too bad he won't let you paint... I guess it's a no even if you offer to paint it back before you leave?

Do you have a rug? On our honeymoon my mom checked up on our place which resulted in a new rug in the living room when we arrived home! =)

definitely agree with the mirrors, especially when placed on the opposite wall of a window,it's almost like having two windows in the room

Yeah, he was pretty strict about the no painting - which is surprising, becuase the current paint job was clearly done by a drunk person or something, it is soooo horrible! There is paint on the doors, on the lightswitch fixtures (clearly someone was too lazy too remove them BEFORE they painted) and on the heaters! And what is even more bizarre (and SAD) is whoever painted it last with the dark blue/grey painted over the STONE on the fireplace. Who does that???? That natural stone must have been beautiful before they painted over it!

We are likely moving next fall after our wedding, so hopefully we don't have to be here for too much longer...but all this darkness is kind of a downer!

@MsHymanRoth - right now there is depressing blue/grey carpet to go with the blue/grey walls, so a rug would look not so hot with the carpet I am thinking. Totally getting a place with nice hardwood when we get out of here! Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Definitely some interesting lighting and maybe some white, floor-length, gauzy curtains?  Rather like the Petersik's did at www.younghouselove.com.  I love the white/blue-grey combo.

Yess! I have an Ikea a 5 min drive away, so that works out perfect :) I love the white curtains! I think having lighter colored accessories in your room makes a differnece.

@ Ian - thanks for the link. I could drool over those apartments all day!

We have some almost "temporary" track lighting in our apartment.  We live in NYC so you're not supposed to do anything permanent unless you own.  You can get super-cheap kinda temp track lighting from Home Depot and install in an hour.  When you take it down, slap some spackle and paint and you'll be fine.  We did it through three different apartments ;o)
