We haven't done ours yet, but we are considering getting ours done at Point Defiance. There are a ton of options in that area.
We did our engagement shoot at Pike Place and Post Alley, and then walked around to different places around the market. If your photographer has a good eye, then you will be able to get every picture you want in that area- we did! If you want, I can post some of our pictures when I get home tonight :-)
Volunteer Park is pretty fun. There's lots of pretty gardens and lawns, as well as the Asian Art Museum, which has some pretty hardscape/architectural elements. On clear-ish days you can see the Seattle skyline, sneedle included :)
I was also going to suggest Volunteer Park--the park itself is beautiful, there are views of the needle, cool sculptures, plus it's near Capitol Hill so if you did want to do two locations you could do a more urban shoot there.
Also, the Olympic Sculpture Park could be cool. Lots of water views and lots of fun sculptures.
@noritake Wow, Point Defiance is a trek. We're keeping it in-town since, as I said, our friends and family are nearly all OOT, so we're into showing off our new city a bit via the photos. I bet you'll get some great ones.
@Jackie-o and @MerryC Volunteer Park and Discovery Park are both great options. And I love "sneedle."
@Decemberbride Yes please re: posting your photos! Yay Pike Place e-shoot porn. :)
I forgot to mention, we are going to have our little 30-lb German Shepherd-wannabe mutt along with us as our favorite "prop," if that makes any difference in inspiring suggestions.
We got some gorgeous shots outside of EMP- those colored walls make for an outstanding backdrop. We also wandered around the amusement park (even though it was October and completely deserted) which made for some really beautiful, fun colors.
@Miss Root, Ooh I hadn't thought of the carnival rides at Seattle Center. I bet those would be really cool in photos. I'm imagining that the first sunny Saturday in the spring will have epic crowds though! Did everyone find that people in crowded places tend to make way a bit for people shooting photos, or not?
You could try going earlier in the day or later in the afternoon; I know literally nothing about photography and lighting but I know my photog typically schedules her engagement shoots so that they all start in the afternoon.
One of the bees (Miss Potato Chips maybe?) did her engagement pics at an amusement park on different rides and they were SO cute. I think your photog could blur the people in the background so that the focus is on you and you won't notice them so much.
Okay, here are some of my favorite engagement pictures from Pike Place:

We took our Save the Date photos in the Volunteer Park Conservatory and they're super fun. Lots of light and fun plants to play with. I also think the Sculpture Park could be awesome.
I have only been to Seattle once, but I remember visiting a park - I think it was called gasworks park. It was a pretty cool location and I actually saw some people taking engagement photos there. Very industrial looking!
I was just at the Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront on Sunday and was thinking it would be amazing for pics. Also, if you did Kerry Park up on Highland drive, there are several cool hidden stairways all over Queen Anne hill that would make really cool pics. There's even a stairway right next to Kerry Park going down the hill. Also, the Ballard Lochs would be really cool and it has a good mix of park setting and industrial, if you wait a couple more months there will be tons of flowers blooming. Also, if you cross the fish ladder to the other side, I think you could get some really cool pics on those grassy terraced hill areas. There's also some cool sculptures on the Magnolia side of the lochs.
I think I just said the word "cool" like 30 times in that comment, hah!
Glad you brought this up, Littlesbirds...I'm totally stealing some of these great ideas for my shoot. Darn, that means that I need to start planning that I guess. :)
@ Decemberbride= those are AMAZING!
@Littlestbirds I'm guilty of having my photog drive all over God's creation for our shoot- but he was down for that. If I had to limit myself I would most likely included pike place because it has so much versitility. Looking through our e-photos I just noticed that they are 100% urban and having a more park-like setting might have been nice. I was totally thinking of Kerry Park for you guys too- the stairs make for a pretty picture. Good Luck! Can't wait to see the fruits of you labor :)
I heard that the amusement park rides under the space needle are going to have a "make-over." Pictures by the rides would be iconic if they do get ripped out. Our wedding photographer convinced the person running the merry go round to let my wedding party up on it without other passengers so we could have a short photo shoot. The pictures turned out really cool!
One of my favorite places is on Queen Anne
It's called Parson's Garden. It's this hidden little gem and next to it the streets are so neat. Old street lights. Cool concrete steps. Neat neighborhood streets.

Pretzel, I admit I was thinking of you when I was pondering whether we could get away with asking our photographers to drive to a bunch of different locations. I loved the variety of your photos. Just in case ours won't do it, I'm going to have to make a decision, and all of you guys are actually making it really hard! I love the idea of the staircases in Queen Anne, and the Ballard Locks, and Gasworks, and the Olympic Sculpture Garden, and now I'm convinced we have to do Pike's Place, and I'm still pondering Miss Root's suggestion of the carnival rides at Seattle Center... what a pickle. :)
@YSAP2M Oh no, really? Wow, then you're right that it would be special to get photos around there if the rides are going to be gone soon.
@Spraguebride Oooh sounds wonderful, I'll check it out, thanks.
[Edit] Oh, and @Decemberbride, thanks for posting those, they are beautiful!
They are totally tearing out the carnival at the space needle. BIG SAD FACE :(
What about on the Ferry. You can take the foot ferry to West Seattle for $1. We did our family pictures at the Sculpture park and it was great because we had city, art and water/mountain backgrounds to choose from.
Gasworks is a great place to get some nice pics of the skyline...especially at night! I did mine at UW, so many great places to take pics, red square, in the trees in the quad...
Just checked back in here for the first time in a few days, Miss Root, those are so beautiful! Thanks for the suggestion and the photos. Hey if any other Seattle bees have a fabulous e-pic or three to share, feel free to post them, I never get sick of looking at them.
I am right with you, I was the pretty nature photos and also the urban photos. We are going to do our shots at Golden Gardens, where we got engaged and then do some urban type shots in old ballard near the Matador where we had our first date!
I am looking for the same ideas! I love the photos bees keep them coming!!!
I was also thinking of balloons? I'd seen some cute pics with them. Any other props that aren't to cliche?

Alright, I've been doing a ton of brainstorming, but I thought, where better to get a bunch of new ideas I might not have considered, but the WB?
We'll be doing our shoot sometime between now and May, on a bright sunny Saturday whenever one happens to pop up. The gorgeous weather predicted this weekend got me thinking about it, though I'm not quite ready yet. (I want to grow the hair a bit more, buy a nice dress, look into arranging a makeup trial for the same day, etc).
My problem is that I want to have my cake and eat it too. I love the natural beauty in Seattle juxtaposed with quaint quirky urbanscapes that have provided the backdrop for so many wonderful e-shoots I've seen, and I want both! I want trees and grass and mountains, as well as shopfronts and urban art and staircases and whatnot.
I haven't directly asked, but I doubt our photographers are going to want to drive all over town to five different locations, so I'm trying to stick to two, ideally close together.
My top ideas so far ar the Arboretum and Golden Gardens, maybe Kerry Park, possibly Pike Place (overdone but always iconic, and very cute to show our many many OOT guests), possibly just around downtown Ballard where we live.
Where were your favorite engagement shoot spots in the city, or where are you getting yours done? Any suggestions? Thanks!
