Bakersfield isnt really a town I would spend time in. I used to go there to our manufacturing plant.

Its only about 1.5 hours to Santa Barbara and that is a fabulous area to spend the day and night in. They have great walking shop area, wineries, beach, restaurants.

@ThreeMeers:  I just looked it up to suggest SB too, and it’s actually like a 2.5 hour drive (whaaa?) but I absolutely second the suggestion! It’ll be absolutely worth every minute of that drive. It’s one of my favorite towns ever, and I would suggest you go and stay the night and really enjoy it. It’s so beautiful, peaceful, and has a lot to do. Enjoy!

@HopefulForLittleOne:  Ahhh so then yes I would do LA! Focus your time maybe in Venice and/or Santa Monica. Can you fly into LA?

I lived in Bakersfield and moved away in the mid-90’s.  The only reason I ever visit is because my mom lives there.  I hate that place so much.  But I digress:  Santa Barbara would make for a wonderful day trip; it’s so gorgeous.  Also, I don’t know what the weather is like right now, but if you’re up for a scenic drive, Tehachapi is also nice.
