I agree rewearability is really nice so I voted for suits. To be honest, I can't tell the difference between tuxes and black suits half the time.
I voted for tuxes, (because you said formal) although I don't think suits are wrong. I hear ya about the $150 to rent vs. own. However, do most of these fellas have suits? Do they care about having another? can they get a suitable suit (ha ha) for $150? If you are trying to take there money into account, maybe you can ask them what they think? I don't think they'd turn down wearinga suit. But if they don't care all that much, maybe go with the tuxes for formality.
I'm also in the camp that can't hardly tell the difference between a tux and a suit. My FI just felt like everybody would be more comfortable in, and look better in, their own suits. He's also got a vendetta out against the tux rental norm - he's been in a few weddings already and has a couple more this year and never likes shelling out $150 for something he's wearing for 8 hours. Most of our guys already owned a suit, and the ones that didn't had been planning on buying a suit within the year anyway. Before we decided on suits we took a little poll to see if the GMs would mind, and none at all did.
I could see how tuxes might fit if you want it to be more formal, or if you have a really specific idea of how you want them all to look or match. We didn't so it works for us. All we'll be doing is buying a tie, and they're wearing black suits of their own.
I think Tuxedos rock and are never out of style but I understand people that don't like them either.
I LOVE tuxes, but from a very practical standpoint, FI could use a new suit. Funny, When I picutre him standing there, I don't even see a tie. My imaginary story is that he was winning at the tables (Vegas wedding) and was running late...I can so see it...
Tuxes look great but I voted for suits -- a straight black, well-tailored suit can look just as great as a tux. Add in that it's basically an investment for life, or until it still fits :)
My h2b and the groomsmen are wearing dark grey suits they already own with burgundy ties (our wedding colors are champagne and burgundy). One of my vendors who is also is a wedding planner said the look is very European and is very popular right now. It is possible to find reasonably priced suits.
I voted on suits. I've never been a fan of rented tuxes, they just never look as good as your own suit!
We're doing suits, and our guys fortunately already own dark suits - we're not asking them to get new ones - so that also makes a big difference cost-wise as renting a tux is generally way cheaper than buying a new suit!

My fiance and I are trying to decide whether to have our guys wear suits or tuxes. Our look of the wedding is pretty formal, but I've seen suits on here that look good too. And I hate having people spend $150 on a tux they'll never wear again - at least a suit they can keep!
What are you doing, and what do you suggest we do? Feedback please!
