I'm not familiar with the area, so I'm not much help there. But if you and your partner are on the same page with planning for fall 2011, I'd make some phone calls. There isn't anything that says you have to wait to do some planning. That way you can be prepared for the wedding, but also not have to rush getting engaged. At the very least, you can find out what the availability is on a few places you are interested in, and then make decisions from there. Fall in VT would be spectacular!
My fiance and I got engaged in early October of last year and didn't have any problems finding vendors for our Northern New Hampshire wedding. BUT...I do know that vendors started booking shortly thereafter.
thanks for your help! we sat down yesterday and looked at his schedule for the next few years (he is in medical school), and it looks like the best time will be the summer of 2012. I'm a little bummed because I was way more into the idea of a fall wedding, but I'm sure it will be fun no matter what.
Don't worry- the great thing about VT is places don't book up too quickly! We are getting married in the Woodstock area in Summer 2011. We booked back in March and pretty much had our choice of dates. I'm still finalizing lots of vendors and it hasn't been a problem. Good luck!
Our wedding is in 12 days, October 10th, 2010. I recommend if you're doing a fall wedding, looking at foliage maps. We're having ours at the Hermitage Inn in south-central VT. It is peak-foliage weekend and all the hotels in the area were booked up at the beginning of September. It's the busiest weekend (Columbus Day weekend) in southern VT every year. Definitley, start looking into vendors sooner rather than later.

My partner and I were thinking about the summer of 2012 all along, but recently we've been tossing around the idea of a Fall in 2011 wedding. This leaves us a lot less time, and I don't think we're going to be officially engaged for a few more months. How quickly do vendors book up for late September/early October? We'll be in the Northeast Kingdom, most likely (maybe the mad river valley area) which is less popular, but I'd hate to not be able to book the venue or food that we want because we're looking less than a year out.
Any ideas?
