Thank you! I said this to DH when we watched it. I just want some random "girl next door" to sing it, not some celebrity trying to make a statement.
I wish they would have let the girl from Glee sing it, I liked her performance MUCH better.
I actually agree with you about the embellishments. Enough is enough.
However, with what she screwed up, I will admit that it is EXACTLY the problem I have with the song. I ALWAYS want to repeat that line, so I usually have to double check the order before I perform it (if I ever do again). So just because I, as a normal everyday person, have the same problem, I am not offended.
But I do think it'd be nice to have regular folks sing at events like the Super Bowl or World Series. Even when they have orphan kids who really can't sing, I think I like that better than celebs getting another paycheck. :)
i was wondering why dont dont get a youth/school choir to sing it - they can only improve on recent performances
i think the big name singers tend to forget that the importance of the national anthem is bigger than they are
Christina always, always does that. ENOUGH! Her performance reminded me of this:
@eloping: I am not sure they think anything is bigger than them, kind of the problem with celebrity these days.
This totally made me think of Eddie Izzard (British comedian) talking about the American National Anthem

Aguilera's performance sucked - it really bothered me, both the messing up the lyrics (really, it's the Super Bowl - you couldn't just review your words beforehand?), and the unnecessary vocal gymnastics. Annoying.
I thought I was the only person that was seriously annoyed with the over dramatic, vowel stretching crap!! I HATE that!! I think the all time best performance was by Josh Groban...classy and touching!!
@ustechie: Everything I've ever seen Josh Groban do was classy!
The screwing up of the lyrics really bothered me. Seriously?? You're singing at the Super Bowl - if you aren't 100% on the words, review them. I sang the National Anthem at sporting events in high school all the time and it really isn't the hard.
Yes! I hate it when they do this! Give the people what they want, not some crazy drawn out diva nonsense.
My mom and dad said the same thing last night. It's almost like they feel they have to put their own special touch on it but it sounds ridiculous half the time.
Meh...it doesn't bother me. She should have remembered the words but I don't have an issue with her adding her own "flavor" to the song. The original composition is kind of boring to me. Even if they have a children's choir sing it, they would still break it into 3 or 4 part harmony which would still sound different than the "original" version.
My BF hated the performance, but I actually didn't think it was that bad. I appreciated that she sang it live at least. She absolutely should have remembered the words but we all make mistakes. Even though she performs as a living she was probably a bundle of nerves.
We actually had a betting pool going before the game for how long it would take good old Christina to sing the song, since she's known to do all the weird vocal embellishments. Ugh. The song is not about the performer's ability to sing, and I really wish they would remember that sometimes.
@Mrs.KMM:Totally agree. My sister and I used to sing the national anthem for school sporting events in high school and college and honestly it's not hard at all.
I hated the long drawn out way she sang it. I was venting to FI about it last night. It sounds so much better when it's sung the way that it was written.
Did you ever see this awesome clip of Maya Rudolph singing it on SNL?
In highschool and college I sang the National Anthem at sporting events. I can understand adding little unique touches to the way you sing it (how long you hold onto notes or adding more feeling to certian phrases), but what she did was way over the top. I also had a problem with the way she sang "Brave" (and the home of the brave) her voice started to crack and she held onto the note. Once her voice started to crack she should have went to the next note. I was extremely disappointed in her performance.
@ustechie: I have never heard him sing the National Anthem, I bet it sounds beautiful!
Thank you!! Christina always has to do that thing where she just oscillates the notes for so long, ugh. I think Lea Michele would have done a better job.
Probably the best ever, courtesy of Ms. Whitney Houston:
As long as people sing the correct words and don't suck, I'm pretty happy. I'd like to see more...er, prestigious singers do it, though. I'd have just thought Texas would've had a home grown country music star do it =]
I think when you mess with a classic song like that too much, though, it just sort of takes the oomph out of it.
@ThunderBunny: Whitney's version is my favorite ever. Normal and AMAZING. Oh and she sang all the right words...so thats good too.
it doesn't bother me. i think our anthem is way too long and boring. i don't know why they just donmt play a pre recorddddded normal version over the loud speakers.
@ThunderBunny: Whitney's version STILL gives me goosbumps! She did an amazing job!
@Miss Tattoo: aww the National Anthem is one of my favorite parts of sporting events! I think it would be WAAAY more boring if it was pre-recorded.
Why can't they all be like Whitney? I could watch her version a million times!
@Miss Tattoo: maybe it's not the most interesting song these days (which is why they get celebrities to sing it), but it is part of American history and it is important. Football is quite American. It is a big event so why shouldn't they do it live? If Black Eyed Peas can sing live, I definitely think the national anthem should be live as well. It means a lot to many people.
@ThunderBunny: I couldn't agree with you more about Whitney's performance of the National Anthem. It's perfect.
I'm not a fan of "runs" in a lot of songs nowadays anyway, so I cringed when Christina started to sing. It's interesting that this trend in music has the same name as diarrhea, lol. It was literally painful to listen to her, and the lyric f-up is unforgivable. If she can memorize her own song lyrics, then this shouldn't have been too difficult. With her experience performing in front of huge crowds, I don't want to blame it on nervousness either. Her voice would be uber-amazing if she just sang normally. I prefer the Canadian national anthem anyway. :)
I get goosebumps and a tear in my eye every time I hear the National Anthem because for us who have been in the Armed Forces, is so much more than a song. It's something that unites the whole country and is extremely special and sacred to me.
Suprisingly, Christina's vocal runs didn't bother me so much. They were a little superfluous in my opinion, but it appeared that she sang it with feeling, which I believe is the most important part.
The lyric mess up? I can't even imagine how she must have felt the second she realized she botched it. It's like a kid breaking an expensive lamp- you don't even need to really scold them, because the second they do it, they KNOW what a huge mistake they made.
@phoenix718: i thought i was the only one that got emotional during the anthem. almost every time. it may be boring but it's very important not only to our country but to families like mine who have or have had loved ones at war and have a true understanding for what the words mean.

terrible video quality...but you get the point...AH-MA-ZING!!!
@JamaicaBride: I agree!
@ThunderBunny: I love Whittney and Beyonce's version of the National Anthem.
Glad I'm not the only one, ladies. (re: Tearing up when I hear the American National Anthem, and hating singers who super emphasize singing vowels in songs.) =)
I can't believe she screwed that up- like- use a cue card lady, or calm down. She basically was yelling the lyrics, incorrectly.
LOL on your comment, cbee. I choked on my beverage while reading your comment coz of laughing. (Re: Calm down.) I can picture her getting all jittery and just end up screaming coz she can't hold a note any longer. =)

Aguilera forgot the lyrics to the American National Anthem. (Cringe) It's getting annoying how these singers belt out vowels in songs too long. Can't they just sing the American National Anthem normally?
