I don't know about their quality but Costco AND Publix are quite nice. Hope someone can give you a good opinion on the others.
I always read about some wonderful cakes from Costco, etc. I would just go and buy a small cake from the store you would like to order from to make sure you like the taste. As long as it tastes great, it will be a great choice for you!
I would love to go with the little grocery store in our small town because they have an AMAZING red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting!! I would definitely consider it!
My dad ALWAYS buys the cakes from Costco for any big family event. They are really good and they can make them look really really nice.
Costco and Sam's Club have great tasting cakes. So does our local supermarket. You should definitely look into tasting a cake from your local supermarket. If it tastes good, you should go for it!
I have heard that Costco doesn't do tiered cakes though - is that true? I love their cakes so that would be ideal!
We are doing a grocery store cake, we picked the design we wanted while saving over $600. We got to taste everthing first so we know exactly what we are getting.
Publix is freaking awesome! Their prices were a little too high for me down here though, but SOOO TASTY! Also... you can choose four samples and they're basically 1/4 of a cake each! YUM!
But since you don't have a publix... I'd just have them do a tasting for you at whichever places you think would be best, then go from there (what kind of decoration can they do? Ever been on Cake Wrecks? etc)
Walmart has some great cakes. The only comment I would add is that some of the decor is a bit 80's, but you should be able to order your cake without all of the extra decorations and maybe add some flowers or ribbon yourself. Also, their cakes taste good (always a plus).
The best wedding cake I have ever had was from a grocery store. Some grocery store bakeries make wonderful cakes and others are not so good. Go with whichever you think has the best taste and price. Guests will remember if the cake was good or bad before they remember what it looks like.
That said, I personally don't care for Safeway as they tend to be dry (at least the ones I've had) but Walmart cakes are delicious.
Walmart and Costco are from the same company
Same company=same icing=same cake. So uh, I'd go with a tiered Walmart cake. Nobody'll know unless you tell them. People just like cake =]
I had Costco cake. But i had sheet cakes.
Sam's Club and Walmart are the same company but Costco is a different corporation entirely.
That's what cake trials are for! You might also consider checking an organic or local supermarket (think Whole Foods) just to see the pricing and taste difference. Honestly, I think the expensive bakery cakes are overrated. For every 1 good baker that's out there, there are 10 overpriced and low quality bakeries! (But I'm crazy picky, see cake trial post haha.)
Hi Im from the area but I didnt even know that Giant/Safeway did wedding cakes! Have you checked Harris Teeter as well?? WHat about Balduccis in Bethesda? I dont know where in the DC area you are but there are Harris Teeters all over the place!
@clarebee, every Safeway I have been to has had a fake wedding cake on display in plain view so that seems like a clue that they would make them. LOL
Getting a tasting is definitely a must. In the situation of a grocery store, if they don't have cake that you can sample in-store, you can get a good idea of what they will be like by purchasing an 8" round which is the exact same recipe.
@clarebee - I have a cake brochure from Giant if you would like it. PM me with your email address. I checked Harris Teeter and they told me their cakes are too soft to tier.
Thanks for all the advice, girls! I'll definitely check out Wal-Mart. I'm going for a really simple look anyway, and my florist will decorate the cake with peonies, so the 80's looking decor might not matter. :)
A friend of mine used a cake from Walmart, she did the same thing, just bought a very blank cake and decorated with flowers, you couldn't tell it was from Walmart and it was pretty tasty!
I thought it was going to be cheaper using a grocery store to do my cake. Turns out it wasn't. The serving size for a local wedding cake bakery was so much bigger even though the cost per slice was more. I got the quotes for the same sized tiers and ended up saving $150 by going with the local bakery rather than the grocery store. Plus, the grocery store cake had so much icing, that I couldn't stomach it. So, moral of the story: compare by size of cake, not by "servings." Plus the bakery cake was so much tastier.
We had planned to go with a supermarket cake mostly because I had heard great things about them from local brides and they had good cake at a bridal show I went to. Unfortunately, after three tastings from different supermarket chains we had to change our minds because they were just not good. While the cakes at the bridal show tasted fresh and moist, the samples we got were bad. Most of the fillings tasted like they were from a can and the cakes themselves were chewy and tough or tasteless.
If you do decide to go with a supermarket cake, make sure that they do not freeze your cake first. I found out that this is why most of the tasting samples we had were bad. Also, watch out for crazy extra charges. The per slice fees were okay, but two of the stores we tasted at had crazy fees: one had a stacking fee of $50 (per tier!) and the other had a delivery cost that was twice as much as another bakery that is three times farther away. So in the end, what sounded like a good deal per slice was a lot of money for bad cake and crazy hidden stacking and/or delivery fees.
Wow, iswimibikeirun and rachel both have really good points! I'll have to look into the serving size vs tier size and any extra charges. I hope it's not really too good to be true... the cheapest cake I have found at a bakery would be about $400 to serve 130 guests. :(
Bakeries freeze the cakes, too. If it's done properly, it won't make the cake bad, it was probably the quality of the cake that was bad.
Safeway! Their cakes are always so pretty & taste a lot more fresh than the other options (IMO). I like Costco cake, but I find the icing has a very strong artificial flavor.
Not sure where you live but we are going with Thriftway (Lamb's Thriftway bakery).
We went to Beaverton Bakery to get quotes etc. The baker was obviously bored to be there-was more interested in watching her friends kid outside the window, she didn't ask me any questions, I had to keep pushing her along. I had NO idea what I was doing or what she needed from me. I told her my general idea and some cakes I liked and she went "ok". And followed by awkward silence. I was so peeved at the lack of attention that I didn't want to bother with their bakery.
My other friends said try Lamb'sThriftway (GardenHome location). The bakers brought out a book for us and a cupcake sample of the wedding cake combos we had asked for (they were SO YUM!!!)-including one they only make seasonally that they said they would make for us if we wanted it. They were super friendly and made us feel much more comfortable. It was obvious their attention was focused on us and asked questions to understand what we wanted.
So my advice is to make a few meetings with a few bakeries in your area. Your first encounter with them can make or break it usually regardless of if its a big company supermarket or a small bakery.
Be sure you have a general idea or inspiration for what you want. Make sure that they help you through the process and are genuinely interested in you-after all they are the ones who know what they are doing-you don't!
Im getting an HEB cake. theyre cakes are delicious and gorgeous!
I think that if you are going with a buttercream cake, what many of the grocery stores are offering is great. At the last bridal show I went to, Hy-Vee had a booth and the cake they had on display was every bit as pretty as any of the fancier bakerys, and it was about half the price. I think if you have your heart set on a fondant, highly decorated and personalized cake, certainly go with a high end bakery. But if you just want a simple wedding cake, the grocery store is fine
Checked my local Sam's Club/Costco bakeries and they do not make round tiered wedding cakes. Does anyone have a picture of their wedding cake from Sam's Club/Costco?
I have a friend who works at a grocery store bakery and she is an EXCELLENT pastry chef on the side. You could ask any of those people if they personally do cakes on the side as well?
That is a great idea! My mom got her start at a grocery store and then branched out to her own business. She took side orders for wedding cakes because it was something the store didnt offer so they were fine with that. Just be careful the bakery manager doesnt overhear the conversation. You wouldnt want to get anyone in trouble in case that store frowns on sideorders.

Hey girls, so the last vendor I need to book is for our cake. I'm considering getting a cake from Giant supermarket. Has anyone had experience with wedding cakes from either Giant, Safeway, or even Wal-Mart? I appreciate your opinions!! Thanks!
