I’m only a new member so I thought I would share my proposal story…
Bit of background: my fiancée S and I met a few years ago and I feel so very lucky that it was even possible. His family lost absolutely everything they owned in a bushfire and were lucky to survive having only just made it out in time. The slippers his nanna had been wearing while she was carried to the car had melted to the ground in the spot where they fell. Just six weeks after that, He was racing at BMX nationals and had an accident which completely split his carbon fibre helmet and broke his neck. He was briefly paraplegic but has fully recovered.
I moved interstate and was lucky enough to meet him on my second day here as neighbours, and obviously I decided to stay!
Proposal story; When we first met, I had just recently ended a long term relationship and was unsure if I wanted to stay in This New City or return to That Old City, and so we just casually dated until he arranged and paid for a weekend in Old City together so that he could meet my family and friends (i.e. get approval) and I could make my mind up on if I wanted to stay or go.
Our flight to the Old City was delayed so we spent several hours in the Airport Lounge and after several glasses of champagne each, he jokingly told me that I should get down on one knee and ask him to formally ‘be my boyfriend’, which I did with an audience – so embarrassing.
Last Christmas, we went out for a cocktail together and he told me that he was waiting six more months to propose because he gets paid in lump sums when projects finish. I was disappointed, but understanding because he is definitely the type to have all his ducks in a row before making any decisions.
The next morning, we were flying back to the Old City to have Christmas with my family so we were rushing to get a 6am plane and I was grumbling about the weather and how early it was and generally carrying on. When we arrived at the airport in the same Lounge, I noticed that there was a huge bouquet of lilies (my favourite) and two glasses of champagne waiting.
I thought they were just a beautiful pre-Christmas surprise until he rushed me to read the card on the table. It said the most beautiful things about our future together, followed by ‘on this very spot, you got down on one knee to begin our relationship, and now I want to do the same for you…’ and by the time I looked down at him through tears, he was ready and waiting on one knee!
It was such a beautiful moment and I was incredibly surprised. I screamed ‘ARE YOU SERIOUS??’ and all the Virgin airhostesses rushed around the corner and said they had been in on the surprise because he had gone to the airport the night before to take the flowers and the card.
Because it happened at 5am, we spent an hour trying to call everyone to tell them and gradually woke everyone up! They announced it on the plane and everyone was grinning at us, and then the pilot shouted us free drinks for the whole flight and shook our hands afterwards.
This is us (him on the left) with his little helper in the middle. Excuse the bed hair and red eyes!
He proposed with a placeholder ring, which was ideal because I really wanted to choose mine. This picture below is the ring I had made which has one stone on top and two little ones underneath. Excuse the quality, I was trying to take them stealthily at work haha
Felt so lucky! Can’t wait to read all the boards and find out more about everyone elses stories 🙂
