I initially did NOT want to go to the beach on our honeymoon, but I found a lovely place that seems perfect and it's by the beach. I don't like swimsuits at all (on me), but it would be kind of silly to go to the beach and never go in the ocean. I'm a size 6 but rather self-conscious (kind of like I don't walk around my house in a bra and underwear so why would I do that on a beach??) The other issue is that I am extremely fair skinned - I even tried tanning a few years ago and I didn't get any color. I feel like I'm going to stick out a ton because I am so pale!
Should I just get over it and get a bikini or can I get away with a cute one piece suit? Does anyone wear "tankini's" or whatever they are called anymore?
What do YOU wear to the beach?
Hey, one piece, tankini, bikini--there are cute options for all of these styles. Just find a color that does not wash you out, and maybe apply some light bronzer? They have those lotions that give you a bit of color over time. I've heard good things. Enjoy the sun, it's your honeymoon!
I rock the bikini...but I think that what matters is that you wear something YOU are comfortable in. I definitely see people in tankinis still.
Other. Bikini Top and Board Shorts :-) Sometimes a rash guard. Depends on how much sun exposure I want. For my honeymoon I'll prob. stick to "short" board shorts. lol.
I like cute retro looking one-pieces. I have chub, but I don't want to feel like a grandma either! I think it's best to wear whatever you are comfortable. PinUpGirlClothing.com has really cute ones.

i wear a tankini, as i have religious/modesy issues with bikinis. i find tankinis to be a little more flattering than one pieces, so that's the route i go. i've found they have much cuter tankinis nowadays. it used to be so frustrating that only bikinis came in cute patterns, but i've found some really cute ones in the past couple of years. :)
I wear a bikini but I don't like walking around like that, so I wear a cover-up until I get to my spot on the beach and then I strip down.
I got a spray on tan for my honeymoon. If you're in the water a lot the color fades quickly but I didn't look so pale. Takinis are cute or like me I wore a bikini with a Victoriat's Secret tank top on the beach and a hat because I tend to sunburn.
@commonshin - any recommendations on a brand? I tried one before (totally can't remember that name) and I was really orange. Needless to say that wasn't the look I was going for!
@Ilikepink - thanks for provide a link! Some of the swimsuits are really cute! Hopefully they get more sizes in for summer though - there are a lot of suits available in XSmall and 2X.
Well it seems like there are a lot of options!
I had my gall bladder removed a couple years ago, which left me with four scars on my abdomen. Needless to say, I stick to a one-piece... I also have a larger chest and have issues finding a supportive bikini top. I actually think a good one-piece can be just as sexy as any swimsuit.. :-)
j.crew has some really cute one pieces and tankinis. check out their sale section!
I wore a bikini, but I always wore a sundress over it. I didn't just walk around in a bikini! (Probably for the same reasons that you have!) VS has some great dresses to wear, and you don't stick out at all!
Bikinis here!! I usually buy a cute cover up from Victorias Secret like @mighty said
I wear a bikini because my fiance loves me in it...
But you can try something convertible like this (victoria secret):
I wear a bikini because I need the tan when I can actually find the time to be outside. :)
I haven't gone swimming in a while actually. Right now I'm not sure if I want to wear a bikini.
We are staying at a private beach, just the two of us, so I may go topless.
Bikini for sure! I figure, no matter how I look, there's always someone who looks worse. It helps me to not be self-conscious.
I hear Jergens Natural Glow really does add just a touch of glowy color. Give it a try? It's probably pretty cheap!
I loveeeee bikinis. I'm not in model-shape (ha!) but I still rock one. I like to get the best tan possible and show off the tattoos ;o)
I get mine from J. Crew. They have lots of cute tankinis too.
I wear bikinis, but I don't walk around in them unless I'm on my way in the water or from the water to my chair. A nice skirt or dress does the trick for me. Not that I don't rock the bikini, I just don't like to put my stuff out there so much!
There are SOOOO many sexy one pieces out. I love them all! But i always default to a bikini because I'm big up top and small on the bottom, but one day, I'll embrace the one-piece.
That being said....i was kinda self conscious about wearing a bikini on our vacation (i'm pale and i'm carrying some post-wedding weight that's not my friend) but after seeing SOOOO many women in bikinis that probably should've worn a one piece (i don't want to be mean but there were some girls/older women letting it ALL hang out all in too-tiny suits and just...should've covered up more. It was a little gross), you probably won't feel so bad about yourself. If THEY can have self confidence, so can you, right? =]
Lots of women were wearing tankinis, though. And there were a handful of really freakin' cute one pieces if you choose to go that route.
I'm a swimsuit girl - meaning I collect them practically! I have at least 10, 5 or so bikinis, a couple tankinis and a couple super flattering one pieces. When I go on vacation, I like to have options - its more comfy for me to wear a one piece if I'm out diving/snorkling, a tankini if I went out the night before (gotta love beer bloat - lol) and a bikini on my skinny days.
The cutest tankinis I've found in store have been either Target (cheap) or the Hula Honey brand that Macy's carries.
I brought like 6 swimsuits with me to my honeymoon. I also brought multiple dresses and skirts and a coverup. I wore a combination of these to the beach usually.
Here is the one swimsuit I bought brand new for my honeymoon. I bought it in the red dot pattern. It looked really vintage. http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/onlineProductDisplay.vs?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=GL-259766&page=1&cgname=OSSWMDDDZZZ&rfnbr=5632
I also have super fair skin and came back from our honeymoon in Hawaii looking completely pale still. I lathered myself up with sun block constantly. I don't like getting burned and I've had skin cancers before so I use really strong SPF all the time now. I saw rock the pale skin at the beach, there's no reason not to go to the beach just because you are fair skinned. Oh, and get a beach umbrella too, so you don't get totally burned.
@Eva: I'm just like you. I wouldn't wear my underwear to the beach so I'm not wearing a skintight bikini that leaves nothing to the imagination. I started wearing bikinis at age 10ish and wore them till I was about 17, when I started feeling REALLY uncomfortable in them. It's not because of the way my body looks--I was a size 2 then and am a 4/6 now. I just feel really weird letting every stranger who sees me ogle my goods. In truth, I don't really like beaches or swimming, but we're going to a secluded villa in St. Lucia with a private beach for our honeymoon and I WILL be wearing some swimwear there. I do like so one pieces, but I tend to want to put cute, appropriate shorts or skirts over them if we're in public. If it's just me and FI on our beach on our honeymoon, hell, I might be naked for all I care, but will probably just purchase some sexy one pieces and skip the shorts.
I like tankinis- you get the coverage of a one piece (or sometimes a little strip of skin showing, which I like better than the whole stomach) but the convenience of a two piece. If you're like me and are different sizes top and bottom or have a long or short torso, then a tankini can be a godsend!
I am a little chunky and I wear a tankini. It is really cute and makes my figure look good. I think you can wear whatever you are comfortable in. There are some really cute one-pieces as well. I am actually going to by one of those "Just Married" tankini's.
I kind of hate swimming and really hate wearing bikinis so when I have to wear something I opt for a tankini top and board shorts.
I wear a tankini at the beach and I have a cute little skirt that I wear over top of my bottoms if I am feeling particularly uncomfortable with how my legs look that day.
I actually prefer tankinis over one pieces because they break up my body better.
I like Victoria Secret for swim suits they really have a lot to choose from.
It doesn't matter what style the swimsuit is-- just something you are comfortable in. so a search online for some differents styles that you like and go from there.
tankini all the way! :D i found super cute ones at sears (i never thought i would there :D)
good luck
i LOVE tankinis - and since my bust is so much larger than my bottom, i cant do one pieces, and im uncomfortable being so uncovered in a bikini - heres a few im wearing for mine! all from http://www.figleaves.com

I go for one-pieces, although I've also worn tankinis. I have never been thin enough (I felt) to wear a bikini because no matter how thin I get I have a stomach pooch (boo). I usually try to get cute ones in a fun print or style that makes the suit feel modern and not old lady-ish. My favorite one I got from target and its giraffe print and looks like a mini-dress with rouching. So cute! (and i dont even generally like animal print)
i wore a tankini and one piece for the honeymoon. i'm just not comfortable in a bikini, and i wanted to be comfortable taking a walk on the beach, etc. i'm also extremely pale, but that's just life. i figure the only person i need to impress is my husband, he knew he was pale when he married me, so oh well.
hey chica :) I am a size 6 too and for a few months I struggled with not wanting to wear a bikini in public, but I realized you know it's my body and I should be happy with it, and I have learned to love my body, and if nobody else does- why should it matter?!
I'm fair-skinned as well, but I'm against tanning. girls who fake-bake before they're 30 are at a 75% higher risk for melanoma. I don't fake bake and I don't know spray on tans either, even natural tanning I'm not fond of, it's so unhealthy. Girl - you have beautiful skin - no matter what shade it is, simply because it's YOUR skin! I personally love it when girls are confident enough in who they are to wear whatever they want because they want to!
:)
Thanks everyone for all the ideas and recommendations! I think I just need to try on some swimsuits and figure out what I'm most comfortable with.
