There's so much swirling around about the vaccine, what are your opinions on it? I was really against it at first but my mother convinced me to get it since it was available at my university. And this morning I log on MSNBC.com and see a story about a 14 year old having a severe reaction. :/ What are your thoughts? Would you get one? Have you gotten one?

I won't be getting one. Or a regular flu shot. Never have, and I've never gotten the flu so I'll take my chances... I know alot of people that have gotten regular flu shots with some mild reactions, but the H1N1 vaccine is in short supply here in KY, plus most of my coworkers are kinda like "Whatever" about it. Not too worried, obviously. I think people are panicking thanks to the "media"

I used to be very allergic to eggs (I'm fine with them now), but my doctor said I shouldn't get the regular flu shot because of my old allergy. I have assumed this means not to get the swine shot too, which I guess shows I feel "meh" about it.

(Knocks on wood now, so she doesn't get swine flu!!)

I got the seasonal flu shot (had to, working in a hospital). The H1N1 vaccine is optional though. I could get it right now if I wanted, but I HATE needles. LOL. That's really the only thing stopping me. Sad, I know... I know several other people that have gotten it here though and they're fine. One of my friends actually has the swine flu right now, and says she feels like she's on her deathbed.

I am definitely not getting it.  The media has blown up the swine flu thing so much.  About half the law school had it, and people were back in class 3-5 days later, which is about the same as the regular flu.  I talked to my doctor and my doctor friend and they both said that the swine flu is comparable to the seasonal flu and that the people who die from it have some underlying condition, which is usually how people die of seasonal flu.  And a larger percentage of people die from seasonal flu than swine flu.  I'm really not worried about it at all.  I've never even had the seasonal flu or vaccine, so for me, getting the swine flu vaccine seems pointless and unnecessary.  I'm not going to risk severe side effects for something that if I get it, it will pass in a week or so. I'm pretty anti-vaccine to the begin with, so there was no way I even considered it.

I was pretty neutral to the idea but I now have an appointment to get it next week. I've had the reagular flu about 5-6 times since my pediatrician gave it to me and never had negative side effects. Since I work at a University, ride public transportation and plan to fly in Dec. Jan and Feb. I decided it would be best to get the shot. Two of my colleagues got it last week and are fine so I'm pretty optimistic.

I work in a hospital so I had to get the seasonal flu shot (which I got about 2 months ago) and recently we were offered the option to get the H1N1 shot as well. I'm asthmatic so I did not get the nasal spray because that is a live virus and I didn't want to chance getting any symptoms that would kick off my asthma. I think that if you're going to be travelling on a plane, then getting the shot (both seasonal and H1N1) is a great idea because you're in an enclosed space that doesn't get cleaned (aka wiped down) after every flight. But remember, they do take about 2 weeks to become useful, so give yourself time for the shot to acclimate.

*Note, that both the H1N1 and seasonal flu shots are created and incubated in egg, so if you have an egg allergy, you should definitely speak with a MD before getting them*

One: Had H1N1 and it sucked. 2: too much mercury in the shot. 3: it am in the group not allowed to get the nasal spray. 4:I cane barely ever eat eggs without wanting to barf all day.

Plus, with somethings, I am a strong believer in letting your body fight it but with this I think that if it were not for points 2 through 4 above i may have gotten it.

I'm not going to get it.  I should be getting the regular vaccine but because I'm living in a new area so I don't know where to go to get it.  I don't know of many people here who have gotten the swine flu and I'm only really around my husband so I don't think that I am exposed to it much.

I suffer from VERY bad needle phobia , but I also react to most shots too (my entire arm swells twice it size  high fever etc). I I won't be getting the vaccine that way , so far the nasal option has not been offered in our area in large doses and I think it's more important for high  risk cases to get it. FI and I are fairly certain that both of us got it last year  , but it was just before they started taking nasal swabs so we'll never know , whatever we had put us out hard. It took months for me to get back to 100% and DH in the hospital ( this is a man who worked thru a broken leg for a week because he didn't want to go to a doctor).

If I had the opportunity to get the H1N1 vaccine (provided everyone in the priority group who wanted it got it, which clearly won't happen this yer), I absolutely would get it.  Knock on wood, I've been fortunate not to have been sick in recent years.  At the same time, I take very crowded public transportation to/from work, and am in school and wouldn't mind getting the vaccine to not only help decrease the chance of me getting H1N1, but also decrease the chance of me getting sick and then passing it on to others.

The flu vaccine is one of the most heavily tested vaccines in the history of the world, with hundreds of millions of doses given!

A lot of communicable diseases are making a comeback because so many people are refusing to get vaccinated... I wonder if the tides will turn any time soon.

I got both the seasonal and H1N1 and had absolutely no problems.  The seasonal one was the nasal mist, and the H1N1 was an intramuscular shot.  It's really difficult to find the H1N1 (and qualify for it!) here in SoCal so I'm glad I was able to get it.  That's a good thing about working in a Children's Hospital.  I'm totally for getting both vaccines for the sake of protecting the sick children I work with!

I would love to get the H1N1 shot, but it's not available widely in my area.  Right now, it's only available for people under 24.  I work with young kids and we've had lots of cases of H1N1 in schools.  Teachers are not in the protected group yet, so I have to just be careful with lots of students having it.  I'm really hoping they make the virus more available soon.

I also got a seasonal flu shot, which I do ever year.

The main reason that I want the H1N1 vaccine is that the virus is very deadly in pregnant women. Imagine if you have the flu before you have symptoms and pass it along to a pregnant woman unknowingly. That's scary and a risk that is preventable. I know that I personally will be okay if I get the flu, I am just worried about the people that I will pass the disease off to. It's a little selfish to not get vaccinated if you think about it. I understand people's fears, but complications are very unlikely.

The people who should get it:

    1. people 24 and under

    2. pregnant women

    3. healthcare workers

    4. people who live with or care for babies under 6 months

    5. people 25-64 with a significant health condition that would put them at higher risk for complications of swine flu

The distribution in our area has unfortunately not followed this and there have been a lot of people who don't need it getting it, which is so selfish when there isn't enough to go round for the people who really need it.  I got it because I fit #3.

I would love to get it... but my Dr's office still doesn't have it, and our county doesn't have any public clinics yet either. It's not fun being high risk (pregnant) and not having any access to it.

I've heard some hideous stories from my OBGYN's office about a few lost babies in their office already to the flu, and as I work at a major university, I'm not exactly isolated from the target populations.

    I would if i could but I can't so I shan't! :)

For me, I have health problems which generally make my doctors almost force flu shots on me. Its so sad its hilarious! But, being a student with NO health care and no money, I can't afford the seasonal flu shot, muchless find and afford the H1N1 shot. I worry about it though because a lot of people I know are getting sick with the swine and the last time I had the flu I was down for 2-3 weeks and ended up having to go to urgent care because it turned into pneumonia. Expensive and time consuming! Yuck! I've been trying to encourage my FI to get the shots too because while he Never gets sick, he brings the illnesses home with him and gives them to me. He seems to hate the idea though...

I have gotten the vaccine, but I am a nurse so it was mandatory. I also have a background in Microbiology and Immunology (first degree), so here is a point that many may not have considered.

If you do not get the vaccine, for whatever reason, that is your personal choice, although I hope it is based on the facts after discussing your concerns with your doctor or nurse, not media misinformation and heresay evidence from family/friends. Say you did get the swine flu, and you fought it off with relatively little trouble. All is well in your world, but unfortunately many healthy individuals who are more than capable of fighting an infection can still pass the illness on to others, many whose immune systems are simply not as strong. What may be a small fever and cough for me could spell someone else's death. That is why I feel it is important to get vaccinated in general - it's not just yourself you are protecting - its others too.

    Just something to consider!

I work in a hospital so I got the seasonal flu vaccine (which I get every year without problems). My hospital is on short supply of the H1N1 vaccine, so I haven't gotten it yet but probably will if/when it becomes open for all hospital workers (right now only high risk patients and workers in high risk areas of the hospital are allowed to get the vaccine).

I work in a hospital so I have gotten both vaccines already.

I agree with Mr. Bee the flu vaccine is heavy researched and safe. The H1N1 vaccine although not heavily researched is being made in a safe and long established manner.

Also, if anyone is worried that these vaccines will give you the flu, it simply can't happen. Vaccines introduce non-active strains of the flu into your body. Vaccines won't make you sick.

KMSull-The media does hype things up, but let me tell you that I work at a major academic medical center and since the start of October our numbers for H1N1 are at pandemic levels. If you can, get the vaccine!

I got both flu shots as soon as they were made available to me! :)

Please stop reading unless you would like unsolicited information regarding the flu :):

It is a personal choice, but I would recommend the seasonal flu shot and H1N1 to people in risk groups. Unfortunately, as guitargirl mention, most people buzzing around the hive are in the risk groups as we are relatively young.

Younger people, especially those who have never had the flu or been vaccinated, are at risk because they have little to no immunity to flu-like viruses - which is why many young children are being diagnosed with H1N1, for example.

There is no way to predict how your body will respond to an infection with the flu before you get it, and there is no way to treat your symptoms (unless you are seen by your physician within 24-48 hours, and even then flu medicines are in short supply this season). Only once you have developed complications of the flu - dehydration, pneumonia, overwhelming infection resulting in unstable hemodynamics, can health professionals really help you, and you don't want that to happen!

At minimum, wash your hands, sneeze into your elbow and good luck fighting the flu this season! :)

I actually already had H1N1. I got it from my roommates. All 5 of us, (my 2 roommates and their 2 boyfriends and me) have all had it. I was down for 1 night, and right back up again the next day. I know that I have a strong immune system and rarely get really sick, though. It really was no worse than a normal flu. It actually was much milder than the last time I had "regular" flu.

I'm not anti-vaccine, but I'm not getting this one.

My option wasn't up there so I put  "I don't know."

I haven't had the h121 shot and I don't intend to get one... but I wouldn't say I'm in the "oh heck no" category. I did get a seasonal flu shot this year at the recommendation of my doctor because I would be traveling on airlines during flu season... but I don't think the swine flu vaccine is necessary for me. Now if I was some place and they were giving them away for free with no waiting I'd probably go get one... but I'm lazy and cheap and I don't think its worth it. :)

(can you add a lazy/cheap option above?? jk!)

If the President of the US didn't get it; that tells me something.  I'm not getting it and never will get it.  I did get the regular vaccine a few years ago and got sick and decided then I'd never get another flu shot again.  I haven't had the flu since.  SMH

Got it! Actually, I was a little worried about it because even though I'm pregnant, most places are trying to reserve their supply for women who are in their 2nd or 3rd trimester.  But my OBGYN got in a shipment yesterday, so I drove right over for my shot.

Nope!  I never get the regular flu shot and I'm not about to start.  I'm not a fan of shots I don't need and I like to think of it as leaving one more vaccine out there for a "high risk" person!

My husband and I are not getting it. We are not anti-vaccine, but we are cautious about what we put in our bodies. We are both healthy adults and if we get sick, it's usually sinus/allergy related to the the weather changing. My personal opinion is that viruses like this come and go and our bodies need to learn how to fight them on their own. Honestly, I've never really ever had the flu(knocking wood!). And I've never got the flu shot. And not to go off topic, but my seasonal allergies used to be horrible. I tried every allergy med under the sun. Finally last year I stopped taking any sort of allergy medication and my body has adjusted. Spring and fall I'll usually have a week or two of sneezing and bad sinus headaches but if I wait it out, all is well. I haven't taken any sort of allergy/sinus/cold pill for over a year and I've never felt better. I live on a lake, we have two cats, and I love to spend a lot of time outdoors so it's not like I'm not exposed to allergens. My non-medical professional opinion is that healthy bodies learn how to fight off the bad stuff. We both see our doctors regularly, we eat a (mostly) healthy diet, and we try to some kind of physical activity several times a week.

That being said, if either me or my husband were high risk we would both get the vaccine. I actually did a paper for school on the H1N1 vaccine and did some research. Like some of the previous posters have said, the vaccine is safe. It's just my opinion that our vaccination efforts should be focused on those that are at the highest risk.

91011bride- I wouldn't base my decision on what Obama (who has no medical training) does.  He is in fact low risk (unless he has a medical condition I don't know about).  I would base it on what doctors recommend- all the doctors I know are getting it because they are in the high risk group.  Moral of the story- unless there is an allergy, get it if you're in the high risk group, and don't if you're not.

As a provider of healthcare and my FI has type 1 diabetes, I got it.  I know a lot of people were/are nervous about it, but the risks of my FI getting sick was too great for me personally. In one of my jobs I am also working with women who specifically had swine flu while pregnant. Didn't want to risk it.
