Also - the doctor feels like the swelling is caused by the weight of my belly on my legs/hips. I'm pretty petite otherwise, so it's just the circulation getting cut off at the waist while I sit at my desk. I'm trying to get paid/continue to work while I can for the next 8 weeks, so I really need to get things done at my desk. I have tried getting up and stretching throughout the day, but come 3:30 and they're so friggin' swollen no matter what.
I'm so sorry!
How often are you getting up and walking around? have you try elevating your feet? Maybe even just flip a garbage can upside down and use it as a footrest?
Maybe it's time to wear more comfy footwear besides pumps? They put a lot of strain on our feet.
I don't have a lot of advice for you, but I can sympathize. Other than putting your feet up when you can and trying to avoid crossing your legs, there's probably not a lot you can do.
During my last trimester, NONE of my shoes fit me. I tried bigger shoes, but that didn't really work. I ended up wearing flip flops or tennis shoes with the laces removed. UGH.
@regberadaisy & @Neva: thanks! I haven't worn pumps since that day. I literally can't even place my feet into any shoes except for flip flops and my Uggs. It's fine, but killer on the self-esteem - I feel so gross and unprofessional in my suit and flip flops. And since I'm super-hormone-emotional I just want to cry amongst my co-workers (who think it's really funny and make jokes... I know they don't mean anything, but seriously, don't pick on the pregnant lady!)
The way my desk is it's nearly impossible to elevate my feet. When they're elevated, it's impossible to reach anything on my desk that I need to work, keyboard, phone, fax, etc.
My husband is on his feet a lot and sometimes it bothers him. When it does he soaks it in a tub of warm water with epsom salt and it helps a TON. I wonder if that will help with the swelling?
How about getting a pair of wide flats?
How far along are you?
At one point I was so bloated my ankles disappeared. Didn't go away until I was 2 weeks postpartum. :-(
I would recommend seeing a massage therapist if you can. Have them redistribute some of the fluid by massaging your legs. Or have your DH massage your legs at night by applying wide, even pressure from toe to thigh in a sweeping motion with his forearm. You can also lay on the floor with your butt against the wall and your feet in the air for 10 minutes a day. It helps a little with getting the fluid back where it should be. Also drink more water and consume less sodium and potassium. That's harder than it seems, but it couldn't hurt.
Sorry you feel yucky without heels. Can you maybe find some ballet flats you like?
so this isn't my foot - but one from an article online about swelling - this is EXACTLY what my feet look like. If you push a thumb in it, it stays like memory foam:

I can tell that my calves are swollen by the end of the day, too, because my pants are tighter down the bottom, lol
@MightySapphire: 31 weeks :) getting there. I'm going to look at some flats tonight - I'd be so happy if I could find just one pair of semi-professional shoes to get me through.
And I do think that tonight may be a good night for a pedicure & massage - even if the swelling doesn't go away from it, at least I'll feel pretty and the massage will relax me.
Thanks for your suggestions!
Yep, my feet looked like that at the end, too. :( I just wore Crocs everywhere, elevated my feet whenever I could, and had my husband rub them at night. Also, make sure you don't eat too much salt since that can cause you to retain water. Sorry your feet are so swollen. One of the hidden "perks" nobody tells you about late pregnancy.
@Mrs. Spring: lol I had no idea this would happen like this! man...
I feel awesome greeting clients and going to meetings in my suits with the footwear I'm forced to wear these days - I may just bring my Hello Kitty bedslippers and totally just make fun of myself. why not, right? ;)
@rachiecakes: Hey, whatever is most comfortable. :) Slippers sound glorious right now, to be honest...
I would get up atleast every hour to walk around for 5-10 minutes.... even if it's just to refill your water, it will help.
And try uping your water intake. I'm sure it has alot to do with just the circulation, but we do retain water when we don't have enough.
I would definitely ask your doctor about the laying with your feet up against the wall. I do this all the time (pre-preg) to help change my circulation & it helps for lower back pain, but I was under the impression that we weren't really suppose to lay on our back after mth 5 so I personally would check first.
Swelling definitely stinks! I got swollen with DS, but in my 8th month we went oot and I had to do ALOT of short distances of walking on family land from house to house... I notice a HUGE change and it really helped.
OMG I remember when my legs looked like that. It was scary! I wore flip flops almost exclusively.
Uggs, Crocs, and other popular flats might be a way to go too if you can style it right.
I haven't been pregnant myself but a girl I used to work with had similar problems to you and started drinking this special herbal tea. It was some sort of root tea, didn't taste good she said but did wonders for her swelling. Perhaps you could google that?
If that's normal what am I going to do in the dead of winter??? Lordy....
What about a pair of ballet flat ish shoes, ordered a size up + wide?

They're not pretty, but at least they would go with nearly everything.

Thanks for the suggestions! And it's good hearing that I'm not the only one - I'm the only out of all my friends that's had this happen, lol
I got these last night at Target:

they're low enough to the toe in the front that the puffy part of my foot doesn't get stuck, lol - and they're not totally hideous :) bonus!
I didn't read the other suggestions, but I suggest skipping the heels for more comfortable shoes. My ankles swelled at first, and then my feet swelled. I delivered two weeks ago and just noticed that I finally have my ankles and feet back. It feels so nice, so know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
At 31 wks, with that much swelling, I definitely would've caved and bought a new pair of flats. The ones you bought look perfect for what you need them for.
OH- and good to know to expect it to last 2 wks past delivery. I just started swelling, not that bad, but still, most of my shoes don't fit anymore. I can't bring myself to buy new shoes when I could deliver any day now that I'm at full-term. But if we're talking another 2 wks on top of that, and it's not really flip flop weather anymore...hmm..
I don't have much advice, but I can relate. My feet were like big dinosaur feet and by the last couple months of my pregnancy, there was literally NOTHING I could do anymore to keep the swelling down. Not even elevating them helped anymore and I tried to sleep with them up all night.
I'm sure your Dr has checked you for Toxemia? Keep your salt down as much as possible as that will help a little bit with water retention. There's hidden salts in everything.
Here's a pic of my feet from when I was pregnant; I could press on them and leave an indent too. They got skinny again after I had the baby and I lost almost 30 pounds after giving birth because of all the water retention. Took about a week after having him for the swelling to go down completely. I was surprised to see the bones in my ankles/toes again. lol
Literally just try not to be on your feet if at all possible, and keep them elevated whenever you can. GL.

About a week and a half ago I wore my heels to my office - just like always - but by 11am my feet were swelling up and out of my shoes! I called my doctor and she had me come in right away, just to rule out preeclampsia/blood clot/etc. Everything is fine.
But the swelling will.not.go.away. No matter what I try. :(
Any moms that can offer some advice? Does anything really work? I've tried elevating them (doesn't really work and is almost impossible to do for any stretch of time in my office anyway). I ordered some compression socks online (they can't arrive quick enough, I'm hoping they might work?).
I have no shoes that fit me. I look/feel really awesome wearing my office attire and flip flops or Uggs. :( It's so frustratiing. Mixed with the hormones, I'm just about in tears every day around 3:30 when I can hardly fit in my flip flops/Uggs.
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
