Sorry! I guess I'm in a Christmas mood today!! :)

I was just thinking & had a great idea, but need your help before I talk to the FI about it (need to work it all out haha)

I was thinking about hosting a x-mas party/get together for the WP, since they all don't know each other & a Christmas party would be fun! I was thinking about trying a Secret Santa thing- $10 gifts & such, but the problem is, how would we draw names? About half of the WP is OOT, so they wouldn't be able to put their name in & physically draw it out... & 1 or 2 may not even be able to come down (one's out of state & one's in the Military, another lives in Canada, but will be coming down here around Christmas sometime, so we could plan to do it when he's here-possibly) so FI & I could draw for them, but we wouldn't be able to participate.

    any ideas?

I think that if everyone joined Elfster, they can be randomly assigned a Secret Santa.  I'm not positive this is how it works, but I think it would be a good option to try out.  Also, it's free.  :)

As far the people who couldn't physically come to the party, I think there's also an option where people can put in their mailing addresses for OOT Secret Santas.  Maybe somebody else who has used Elfster can chime in, but I think I remember it working this way.

Maybe you could just do a white elephant. This is when everyone brings something they already own. You pick a value say 10 dollars so the item has to be at least worth that. They wrap it and bring it to the party. All gifts go on table and everyone that night gets a number so in a hat put numbers say 1-10 for 10 guests. #1 goes first. They pick a present and open. Than #2 goes. #2 can either take #1's gift or pick one off pile. If they take #1's gift than #1 picks a new gift and opens it. if #2 takes off pile, they open it and #3 goes. Each person has the option of either stealing a gift or picking off the pile.

If you steal, the person you stole from can't steal it back that round. A gift can only be stolen twice, and at the end whoever is #1 gets the final steal.

This eliminates a lot of crazy planning ahead, whatever people bring can be pretty funny and everyone gets to move around a little. I've been to ones where people wrap up rolls of duct tape, or toilet paper, or some people buy toys from toys r us and stuff, it can get really funny the more creative people get.

Just tell each guest it has to be a neutral guy or girl gift.

ahhhhhhh the white elephant party is a GREAT idea!!! Our dept. at work used to do that, and there would be like 75 of us in a huge circle. And the stuff people brought was hilarious! One year, the VP of the dept. - older gentleman -  ended up getting a VHS tape of MTV's "The Grind" workout!!! I think I may have peed a little when he opened it! Some people would get other stuff though, like a fleece blanket, or gloves and scarf set. They were great!

I think it sounds like fun. Mrs Spring has a great idea on how to make it work with everyone being so far apart and still be able to participate. That way, you and your FH can join in the fun as well.

if I were in your situation, I would ask my roommate to divide the names up, and I would give her everyone's email addresses, so she could send out personalized form emails to everyone saying who they got.

I'd also encourage use of Amazon and their amazing spend-$25-get-free-shipping. :) You can buy ANYTHING on amazon!

yeah I thought of the white elephant last night when I was talking to the FI about it. I'll have to talk to him more about it & see which would be better.

I love the version with the numbers, we used to do that at my old company but with new $10 gifts. We did not cap the stealing but you could only steal once on your turn or if your gift was stolen and number 1 got the final choice. Gifts typically included scratch tickets, gift cards, kitshy things like a chia pet or talking fish, coffee, movie tickets, candles and even a set of his and hers Christmas underwear which were re-gifted the following year. The host always put in an extra gift so that there was always a choice. I know at least once, his extra gift was the left over one so he returned it!
