I think it’s fine.

We’re doing a buffet as well. I’m doing 19″ wide table runners and then 6″ runners in the other direction, favors and then guest book cards (instead of doing a guestbook each person gets a card to write something fun on).

One idea is to do chargers or placemats to mark each place.

@Miss Cake:

My suggestion when we use paper plates or cutlery I tend to go to purchase paper dinner napkins (not the beverage or luncheon napkins) and fold them into one  shape like the restaurants do .  and place them on the table . You could easily find designs that you could fold using paper napkins.

Google in  ”   wedding table settings without charger plates and you will get many hits”  than click on google images

I’m going a similar route as you, and I’m not worried about it.  We’re having a BBQ buffet with paper plates/plastic utensils.  I did, however, get linen napkins for the tables.  My plan is to set the table setting with the linen napkin and favor – that’s it.  Once people sit down, they bring their drinks, throw their purses on the table and whatever else and no one will think it’s bare.  =D
