I think it will still look nice! I agree with your FI - it always really irritates me when I feel like I am stepping on the bottom of the tablecloth!
It will look fine. Promise. Well, I promise that, on the day of your wedding you won't care. In general, they will look fine. :)
It'll look great! Call it foot room! Nothing worse then getting your heels caught in the tablecloth because its puddled on the floor and feeling embaressed as you struggle to get disentangled...

Once all of your guests are seated- no one will even notice. Actually, no one will probably notice anyway... its a bride thing to get caught up in these little details!
It will look fine! Most people wont even notice and they will still be low enough to the ground that you wont be able to see the table legs across the room.
For your reference, here is a picture of 120" tablecloths on 72" tables at our wedding. They looked fine!

So, I found a great deal on 120" tablecloths, but then I discovered that they will be 6 inches off the floor with our 72" tables. I really need 132" cloths, which the place I wanted to buy from does not sell. Has anyone else used the 120" on 72" tables? Does it look funny? FI thinks this is a good thing since this way people won't kick the tablecloths all night. I see his point, but still want everything to look nice.
