I think they don't have to be exact matches, but something with the same feel of the wedding.
Can you post them here so we can see?
Today, I think pretty much anything goes!
I don't think it's tacky. Mine are not going to be similar at all. They're both going to be whimsical and fun but really no other continual theme.
I think as long as you like them, that's all that matters!
No, it is not tacky to change your mind. Many people won't even remember what the save the date looked like by the time they receive the actual invitation. I am all for keeping everything coordinated, but if you found something you like better, it's not a big deal.
@bellenga we're date twins!
So my std's: http://whimsicalprints.com/store/WsDefault.asp?One=189
Thanks!
I say Go For it! And they both have an asian feel!
Oh, it's definitely not tacky. A central theme is nice, but I think it's cool to have different aspects of your theme going so your invitation isn't just a repeat of your STD. For example, we're getting married in Seattle on New Year's Eve...our STDs will feature a picture of fireworks and the Space Needle and our invitations will be more winter/snowflake themed.
I don't think it's tacky at all! We're planning on doing different STDs and invites that really aren't related to each other at all.
i actually think it's nicer (IMHO) to have completely DIFFERENT feels to the STDs and invitation suite. it's almost like there's a cool subtext to the more formal aspects of the wedding and it's another chance to surprise and wow guests.
I don't they that they necessarily have to match.
Here are a couple of suggestion though. Buy a stamp of that douple happiness logo and stamp the inside flap of you envelope so that it will be the first thing that your guests will see. Match the inkpad with the color of the cherry blossoms (fuschia pink or red? I can't quite tell). Or you could buy a pink or red ribbon and attach a double happiness charm like these charms shown in the link. Tie the ribbon around your invites.
Good luck!!!
I dont' think it's tacky, people will probably not notice, and I doubt many people feel that they do have to match.
I don't think it's tacky. STDs don't really matter that much. People hardly remember them and they aren't going to compare designs between STDs and invites.
Our STDs will not match our overall "theme." They're fun and playful and nostalgic, whereas our formal invitations will be more vintage-inspired. No biggie. At least not to me!
Oh, and I wanted to add - our STDs aren't matching our overall theme. My fiance was itching for something more colorful and crazy, so they're going to be pretty different from everything else - we figure we're the only one's who'll notice!!!
i bought my invitations on target too... and my std was a youtube video... i dont think they had to match at all... they are far apart that i dont think somebody will notice... go for it... i love your selection
No need to match. My STDs and Invitations do not match (although both have a bicycle theme). I think the cherry blossom invites are gorgeous. I say go for it! ;)
Those invites are lovely! It's not tacky at all and honestly? Your guests probably won't even notice. Go for it!
I'm with moo...ppl won't even notice and if they do they won't care. Go for it!
I don't think it really matters if the STDs match with the invitations. People only keep the STDs till they receive the real invitation. Mine will not match. So I'm going to say it's not that tacky.
Congrats!
I like msqthoney's idea about the stamp! Overall, I don't think it's tacky at all. I think the double happiness and cherry blossoms go well together because they both are asian. (don't know if that was something you were going for, but they do fit a larger theme--does that make sense?!?)
I like them and think you should do what makes you happy!
Not a problem at all. A lot of people go with very different STDs than invitations.
So what did you decide to do about the std's and invites?
Totally not tacky. STD's are chosen so early in the process I think it's natural that your vision would evolve by the time you send out your invitations. Also, I think STD's are often a place to have some fun, and do something more "out there" while an invitation often requires a more formal feel.
Thanks for all the great responses! For some reason I had it ingrained that they should match...but I think I will go with the cherry blossom wedding invites!
@ msgthoney where did you find those cute charms?
crash806, this is where i found them:

So I have already sent out my STD's (it featured the chinese symbol for "double happiness" on it) and was all for getting the matching wedding invites to go along with them. However I was browsing the aisles at Target today and saw that they had wedding invites that you print out out at home and and one particular design caught my eye and now I am leaning on using that design....the probelm is that they really won't go with my stds. So the question is...is it tacky to do a totally different design for my invites? or should I keep the double happiness theme going?
