My fiance and I had our hearts set on spending our honeymoon in Tahiti and Bora Bora. Trouble is, we really need to take our honeymoon in December, for work reasons. Every travel agent I talk to says something totally different. Some say it’s great, and mostly rains at night while we’d be sleeping anyway–or that it’ll just rain in short bursts. Others say it’ll rain for the whole trip and suggested we do the Maldives or Seychelles. Both seem to agree that it’s out of the main cyclone belt…but they admitted that a cyclone is possible, though unlikely. I’m not sure what to think. I know it’s the rainy/cyclone season, but how bad is it, really? Has anyone been to Tahiti and/or Bora Bora in December? Will it rain for days at a time? Or is it more a tropical rain that bursts for 30 min and then goes back to sunny again?
Assuming you think Tahiti in December is bad…where do you recommend we go? We’ve had our hearts set on Tahiti and Bora Bora for so long that I’m not sure what our second choice would be. I’m open to suggestions…but we don’t want to go to Europe, Costa Rica, Hawaii or the Caribbean. While I love all of those places, my fiance and I have both been to each of those places multiple times and we wanted to go somewhere more exotic and special for our honeymoon. Ideally, we’d like to go somewhere that neither of us has been before.

@CelticBeachBride: Have you been to Thailand?

Bora Bora is one of my must see destinations! Obviously we haven’t been, but I thought I’d comment for two reasons.
1. We are looking at going to the Maldives at the end of September/start of October, which is ‘monsoon’ season, so I’ve been reading reviews and talking to travel agents about how that would affect our holiday. Some say that it will rain the whole time; others say it will be beautiful, barely any rain. A couple who have been twice (once during peak season and once during monsoon season) said that they had much better weather during monsoon season and would recommend it over peak.
So, yeah, we’re kind of in your situation decision wise – we’re probably going to go for it – even going in peak time doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have beautiful weather.
2. If you decide not to go to Bora Bora/Tahiti I would suggest the Maldives and the Seychelles (both of which you mention being an option) and if you’re looking for other sunny, beachy locations consider looking at:
- Zanzibar, Tanzania
- Boracay, Philippians
- The Whitsundays, Australia
- The Bay of Islands, New Zealand
- Phuket, Koh Samui etc., Thailand
- The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
- Easter Island, Chile
I consider all those ‘exotic and special’ locations 🙂
SO and I spent two weeks in the Whitsundays last month, and have been to the Bay of Islands a few times, so feel free to ask any questions if you would like info on those areas. My SO has also been to Boracay and loved it.

@julies1949: No! I haven’t! I’d love to go there when we can do the whole Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam circuit. However, I’m not sure if my fiance can go to Cambodia or Vietnam. His work doesn’t allow him to go to certain countries (ex. I know for sure that he definitely can’t go to China, Russia or Cuba).
@Mischka: I think we may just risk it, too. We’ll see. Thank you so much for the information. That’s really helpful! And those are really great suggestions! My cousin lives in New Zealand, so my fiance and I were there for his wedding a few months ago and we went to the Bay of Islands. It’s beautiful there. I’ve also been to Zanzibar before–it’s REALLY wonderful! One of my favorite places in the world! However, I’d caution honeymooners about it. They have a VERY high incidence of malaria in Zanzibar. On my trip 5 people I knew came down with Malaria two weeks into the trip. One was VERY seriously ill and had to be airlifted to a London tropical disease clinic. As much as I loved Africa–and Zanzibar specifically, that’s not something you want to deal with on your honeymoon. Also, if you go there, fly. The ferry from Dar is often MASSIVELY overloaded, and a few years ago they had a ferry sink because it was overweight. Again, not something you want to deal with on your honeymoon.
I’m definitely looking into the Maldives, Seychelles, and Thailand as back ups as well…but as much as I’d love to go to any of those locations (they’re all STUNNING), none seem to hook my fiance and I as much as Tahiti/Bora Bora/Moorea. That said, I’ve always wanted to go to the Galapagos! I’ll definitely consider adding that to the list! Again, thanks!

I was in Tahiti last December. Their seasons are opposite of ours. Everyone was commenting that it was so hot, even the locals were complaining about the heat. However, Tahiti is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. I highly recommend it!

Not that this is that helpful but we went in July, which is technically their winter. I LOVED it but I thought it was a bit cold for me (we live in Australia so everything below 30 is cold). It was also a bit windy and there were the occasional short shower. It usually blew over within 5 minutes. I guess the point I’m making is that it’s a fantastic beautiful magical place whatever the weather! It may not have been my ideal weather but Bora Bora could not have been more perfect and I loved every second of it!! I would go any time of year and be totally happy just to be there. Besides a bit of tropical rain is very romantic I think.
