FI popped the question at a really nice romantic dinner on Saturday 4/14/2012.
As some of you may remember I was a snoopy waiting bee. I found out more than I ever wanted to know about the ring and I even had a very good idea of the timeline. I really was expecting to get engaged this past weekend. I couldn’t concentrate on anything all last week. Well things changed rapidly on Friday to the point where I didn’t think we would be getting engaged for another couple of months.
On Friday I called my then SO and he sounded upset. I asked him what was wrong and he started balling (crying his eyes out). When he got home he started telling me all about the ring. He told me it has been a long process and the jeweler has been late with all of the deadline including the CAD drawing. He told me he was finally getting it today (Friday) but when he went to pick it up it wasn’t the ring he had designed. It didn’t look like the CAD, it wasn’t what they had talked about, and IT WAS IN THE WRONG GOLD. He told the Jeweler this really disappointed him and started to try and make a deal with the Jeweler. The Jeweler is supposedly a family friend so FI stepped outside to give him mom a call and ask for advice. Meanwhile the Jeweler took the center stone out of the ring (a family heirloom) and LEFT THE STORE. My FI went back into the store and they told him what had happened and that they could not put the diamond back in the setting without damaging the stone. His only options were to take the stone or wait another 10 days for them to get it fixed. FI didn’t believe they could get it done in 10 days as the whole process had already taken 3 months! So he decided to take his diamond and go home. NO RING!!!
Well Saturday morning we meet up with my future in-laws for breakfast. His mom tells me that she was very saddened to hear what had happened and had actually been crying about it. They ask to take the two of us to a couple Jewelers in town to look for other rings. Sure they won’t be custom made but they will still be great quality and we would not have to go through the whole custom process again (since it obviously didn’t work out for FI). Well I found two rings I really liked. One had a beautiful setting. The side detail had diamonds and was to-die-for. The other didn’t have nearly as pretty of a setting but the top view was just stunning. I really decided that the ring with the top view was the one for me. That being said we were done looking.
After ring shopping we were so excited even though we didn’t have the ring because we realized it wasn’t the end of the world. We went grocery shopping and when we got home FI asked me to start getting ready for dinner. I got in the shower and he took out the trash. Without me knowing while he was taking out the trash his parents met him with the ring. They went back to the store and had the heirloom diamond put in the setting and took it to him.
I should have known because so was acting sweeter than normal but I HAD NO IDEA!! When he proposed in the restaurant I started crying and had an ugly cry for sure. I really don’t remember what he said but I don’t think I said yes right away because I was crying and he was on his knee for what seemed like forever! I asked “did I say yes?” “YES” “Yes”!!
Much to my surprise after dinner FI had my whole family waiting for us at Hard Rock hotel and Casino to celebrate. I couldn’t have asked for a better emotional roller coaster ride before the proposal!
